This topic is long but worthy of its reading.
It shows the investigation, the planning and the discoveries,
along the way. Pictures from inside the tunnels, video's also
and the locations of the entrances. This topic is forever expanding
as we find more information. We hope you enjoy this topic
as we have researching and discovering inside those tunnels.

Earlier, I came across a random site with a discussion about Bidston Hill Underground tunnels which I never knew even existed.

So I looked into it a bit more....

More tunnels exisit by MSF Ford in Hind Street, Birkenhead. (leading under Market Street to Woodside)

"If you go to the junction of Worcester Road and Boundary Road there is an electric substation. There is a manhole cover about 10ft from the door which has been grassed over now. That had a ladder leading down a ventilation shaft into the tunnels. The tunnels go under the Proudman Oceanographic place and for some distance towards the other side of Bidston Hill."

It goes on to say that they are all sealed up now.

That entrance that is mentioned that is to the left of the main entrance, I know the one, that was accessable in the late 80's. Now the wooden beam is now just visable and council have back filled it with concrete and stones, pretty much impossible to access. Though you can access it from the main entrance when it was open. The thought of vehicle access is quite right, I read that vehicles would have been coming and going to take the sandstone away just like the tranmere tunnels, though the slope up to the main entrance was made by the fill out of the tunnels.

Another cutting in the rock between the main entrance and the entrance with the wooden beam, just a corner of it though but definately man made, probably just storage alcove to stop equipment getting wet.
