Anybody else been watching this on channel 4? It's been on about 3weeks now and it's showing how this community of fundamentalist Mormons live with their multiple wives and loads of kids. I've found it very interesting and this week it's focusing on a law making this practice illegal. I think as long as all parties consenting and OK with it well leave them be. Be curious to know what others think?

My view is that state and church should keep their noses out of the bedroom. It is none of their goddam business how people conduct their lives, and as self-appointed guardians of our morals, the examples they set are nothing to write home about anyway.

I am delighted that more and more people seem to be ignoring the institution of marriage and simply living together.

Haven't watched the programme but as Mormon marriages aren't legally recognised in the UK, how could they possibly legislate against them? In the eyes of the law they are an unenforceable agreement the same as the many couples (or more) who have a bond of allegiance.

Legal marriage is purely a contract, the rest of the faff and expense that goes with it is profiteering by certain trades, much the same as Christmas, Easter etc.

This was centred around a community who lived out in the desert and had blasted into the rock face and built their homes from that in Utah America. Over the years it has built up into a great little town called Rocklands Ranch. Apparently the polygamy way of life is always being challenged in senate trying to make it illegal but as I say it seems to suit these people and they to me were doing no harm so why can't they live how they want. It was a really interesting programme ,I enjoyed watching it.

Probably originated from the idea that the men were able to support their wives, being the bread winners. Women would never have been able to do that.

That's just my theory, and as Mormon is a religion with origin in about early 1800's, they could have made up any rules accordingly. Possibly started with men who hoped to father children and expand the numbers within the community.

Raises all sorts of questions...
Does he sleep with them all at night or on his own or with one particular one or a different one each night/week.
Does he drag them all along for a coffee or one at a time, what about going shopping or out for a meal.
Does he have a special relationship with one and the others just skivvies?

No Fish, in this programme they all have their own home next door to each other. His time is shared equally between them and each has a night out with him on their own. The wives all go shopping together and help each other out, and it did show that they do find it very difficult at times and resent it when hes with the other wife but they said this is how God wants it. The husband spoke quite openly too of how stressful it can get. One guy already with 3 wives had a brother who died leaving 2 wives and it's expected for them to join this guy's family to be looked after, meaning 5 wives now and more kids. Its strange but if that's what they want and it works for them, why not..
