@lincle - It'd be a good idea to invest in an electric hair trimmer so you can give your dog a trim yourself. They cost around £11, and it's very easy - you put the blade/length guard on, and run the trimmer through your dog's hair just like you're brushing him. I always groomed my dog myself, and as he was a long-haired miniature Yorkshire Terrier, it must have saved me a small fortune over the years!

Good advice Gold Moon, but perhaps try to borrow one first to see how you and your dog get on. We thought to try grooming our little girl ourselves when our groomer was indisposed, our dog clippers cost a damn sight more than £11, closer to £150. Long story short, dog hated it, blood spilled [mine], wife in tears, never again. Our dog is a rescue who was badly abused before we got her and although her physical scars have healed we are still discovering psychological problems even after four years, but we love her.
