I believe my ancestors ran the Glegg Arms in the 1890s. I have also been told about a pub that was in an area, in the docks I think, known locally at the time as the Gourri (don't know how to spell it) Piazza. Does that mean anything to anyone please? I think this would have been in the late 19th century. Thanks.

The Glegg Arms, Gayton, in 2003. It's hard to spot the Pub name as the "Out & Out Restaurant Pub" branding grabs your attention

Used to be a good pub --- once!

Gourri Piazza was on Liverpool waterfront & they have renamed another area with the same name.

When you compare how it looked in the 1910 & 1947 photos to what it looks like now...... ? They ruined it with that tatty crap frontage.

Yes Tatey, it WAS a good pub. A favourite watering hole of mine in the 70's.

At least it hasn't closed - yet !

Well, they haven't changed the upper storey much, but the dragon at the apex of the gable has lost his wings.

Agreed, it looked much better before . The roundabout area looked a whole lot nicer when both this pub and The Devon Doorway opposite, were both a striking black and white.

A few years on and, having been alerted that Whitbread have a planning application in to demolish the pub, a search had thrown up this thread.

The pub has also known as, from one of the photos, as Glegg's Arms.

https://whatpub.com/pubs/WIR/077/glegg-arms-heswall

Now slated for demolition with a planning application in, to be considered under delegated powers.

APP/24/01225 Full Planning Permission

Glegg Arms Chester Road, Gayton, Wirral, CH60 3SD

Demolition of existing hotel restaurant and replacement with new building providing additional hotel bedrooms, together with alterations to the car park and all associated works

Heswall

Received Date: 28-08-2024
Valid Date: 04-12-2024
Expiry Date: 29-01-2025

Consultation on the application ends: 11-01-2025

It looks like the whole site comprising the hotel, car park, and 'pub' is regarded as a single planning unit.

The historical, C19th, elements appear to have been fairly well trashed over many years, and are vestigial.

Use class is asserted as C1, though the Heritage Statement for example includes seven historical references to use as a public house, and then:

2.26 To the interior the building has been significantly altered to accommodate modern public house and restaurant requirements and expectations.

There was a suggested C17th connection, which seems a little tenuous …

An update/feedback has gone to CAMRA's Wirral (WIR) branch.

Not a listed building and not a preservation area so you can't stop the owners knocking it down, all they have to do is inform the Council and show how safety is managed.

The new building is in keeping with the existing travelodge and similar use and size of old building so its unlikely permission can be refused for the new build.

I preferred the Glegg to the Devon Doorway when I lived nearby.

Some readers react to the news ...

https://www.wirralglobe.co.uk/news/24817252.reaction-hotel-chains-planned-demolition-glegg-arms

Still not found anything so far that suggests that there is a C17th inn hidden in there, or on the site ....

Quote
The Glegg Arms a 17th Century inn on the Chester High Road named after the local family who have a long association with south Wirral. In 1552 the manor of "Grange Hall" was granted by Edward VI to the Glegg family of Gayton, with whom it continued till the death of William Glegg, in 1785.
