The corporation was forced to issue a statement after the presenter Jeremy Clarkson said the programme,
which regularly draws an audience of more than seven million , would not be returning in summer for a new series.
In his weekly newspaper column, the 47-year-old broadcaster said that contrary
to what the continuity announcer said at the end of the last series, the show would not be back in summer.
“Can I just say, here and now, it won’t be,”
