I remember the Derby Pool very well. I have lived in Wallasey Village all my life and a walk to the Derby was possible after school and of course during the school holidays. I remember the water was always damned cold. I used to swim a lot and my birthday present in April each year was a baths contract. That was great because in summer the queues at the Derby were VERY long - but if you had a contract you could jump the queue.
I remember also there was part of the surrounds with an upper level (on the seaward side) and that was the prime spec if you could get it because you were better placed to oggle at the girls below.

New Brighton baths were a bit too far to walk from Wally Village after school - and anyway it was a bit "posey" compared to the Derby. Another point for us Village lads was that you always had to pay to get into New Brighton pool, but at the Derby you could (with care) sneak in under the wire from the golf course side. I never had to do that because I had the contract - so I went in first and helped the others under the wire.

I REMEMBER NEW BRIGHTON BATHS HAVING BIG CONCERTS THERE IN THE 80`S! THE LIKES OF CULTURE CLUB AND SPANDAU BALLET!! THEY WOULD COVER THE POOL OVER AND THE TICKETS WERE FREE IF YOU GOT THERE AT A CERTAIN TIME. WE USED TO GO STRAIGHT FROM SCHOOL IN WALLASEY VILLAGE AND BEG STEAL A LIFT TO THE POOL. SURE THEY WERE SHOWN ON TV AS A CHARITY / AWARENESS PROGRAMME.

I missed the new brighton rocks somehow but remember the baths well...and of course the Derby Pool (coldest water in the land!)
NB Baths also had rooms for hire for birthdays etc. The last one I attended there was for a ton up for four twenty five year olds and shortly after it was all closed down. There are some great clips on You Tube though for those who would like to see agreat baths at its best!
...going to search for derby pool nows to see what that throws up!

Too young to of been to the Derby but do remember going to the New Brighton Lido a couple of times and it was really, really, really, really, really, really cold.
I also remember going as a shild to the worst fireworks display ever there - the rain had got into the fireworks and only abou 20% of them went off. There was a commentator and he kept saying now for some more rockets (hopefully) and nothing would happen.......

When was that taken? Is that where the patch of wasteland is where everyone takes their dog for a crap? I can't ever remember seeing that recently.

Gone a little off topic now - mainly because the original link and thread I posted no longer exist It was more a thread about what used to be there years ago, and where its name came from - the car park / pub area used to be an open air swimming pool

The Derby Pool in Harrison Drive, Wallasey in 1933, a year after it opened: The pool was opened on 8th June 1932 by Lord Derby, after whom it was named. The pool was smaller than New Brighton swimming pool having a capacity of 1,000 in the pool and about 2,000 spectators.
