I watched a video at my uncle's years ago (he was really into trains... not a train spotter, but really loved everything about them, had hundreds (literally) of video's about them) and it showed the Merseyrail network over the year's, it was on 3x 2 hour VHS's and one of them had a section about the changing to electric to Hooton etc and showed people changing train's to continue on their journey as the video must have been pre-1993.

As a child though, I would have only been about 7 when the line was electrified past Hooton, so never got to travel on them from what I can recall and have never really used that line much anyway except for the odd occasion in all my life.

But what was it with all the older train's that came after the age of steam; I mean ffs they all looked like proper cheap shed's as though they should never have been in service, look a right mess haha, at least the train's nowadays, whilst never on time, are quite stylish to a certain degree!!!

Would they have been off the Wrexham line then? As that terminated at Birkenhead North for a while during the 70's?

Don't think the Wrexham line was ever L.M.S. & I didn't know the Wrexham trains came to North. I do know that for a long time, the line to West Kirby was L.M.S., which had taken over the Wirral Railway at the grouping in 1923.

Yes, they went there in the 70's for a short time:

One of the 1938 (Class 503) units was restored to LMS (Crimson Lake) livery for the 1986 Mersey Railway (100ys) celebrations. It was brought out on other special occasions (Santa Specials etc.) as well.

A (Class 502) Liverpool-Southport-Ormskirk unit was also re-painted in maroon and restored to as near its 1939/40 condition as possible. I was a member of the small group who got the unit working and passed out to work "main line" Happy days !!

The 502's & 503's were built like brick "outhouses", had simple traction systems and gave years of (mostly) trouble-free service.

The house is festooned with 503 luggage racks, grab straps, lamps etc. Even the door bell is out of a 503 cab. Sad git !!!!

going to far lol, i vaugly remember they had 9000 doors down the sides and passengers sat in compartments unlike today and everyone was very friendly and old women had them wordsearch books and boiled sweets, god i need therapy lol, oh yeah and they were well ard trains (crap power but well ard)
