I remember toy and hobby, pestered my parents everytime in town to go there, as a kid it seemed huge, rubber green flooring and shelfs stacked high with toys. Also a bit of a way from town but the old sweet shop in Bidston avenue called vernons i think, sold all sweets under the sun plus had the seventies cardboard advertisements for marlboro and the likes, the shop was set out similar to arkwrights shop in open all hours, the same bloke worked there when my dad went there as a youngin and he is 63,

I'd like someone to check for me, please, whether Bernards the tool shop is still in Oxton Rd. It was a couple of years ago. About 100 yards up from Charing Cross, on the right. If it is, it must be one of the few shops remaining from my childhood. I remember my Dad sending me there for screws, etc. Just opposite Bernards was a good bookshop called Mortons. A bit further up Oxton Rd. on the corner of Windsor St. on the opposite corner to the Windsor Castle pub was a butchers called Hoyle's. He must have been Catholic, because I remember seeing nuns going in & he would put meat in their bag. No money changed hands.
Carpe diem.
