final bill for the tunnels settled at 48.006 of which 6.510 was the liability of birkenhead corporation official number of bunks erected 1.596 intended total 2.136 .20.000 tons of spoil removed
I wasnt sure whether this was the right place to post, im sure i will stand corrected, but while we were in the reference library in Birkenhead today looking for some info on something we found some information in a book about Bidston Hall and the possibility of a tunnel that connected it to Leasowe castle.
As a kid, when coming down from the top deck, assuming there was no one behind you and no conductor on the platform, a simple jape was to wizz the destination blind handles round as fast as possible.
When you alighted and the bus drove on its merry way, it was always a laugh to see what the potluck destination and "via" blinds read !
Ah such simple fun !!! Kid's today ..... don't know what they are missing !!
I know what some of those buses were missing when the crews came back from their tea breaks in Virginia road. I'm admitting nowt but they really shouldn't have left their boxes with all their change in those cubby holes with no locks on them. 40 tanners to the pound. Happy days!
It's quite frightening reading some of the posts on here. Do you remember such and such. Of course I do it was only a couple of years ago or was it?
All the old bogs I used to use when I was out in my van.(Not in a George Michael sense of course!). I can remember trains going from Seacombe to wherever? I remember going in the cafe at Seacombe station and once going to Chester on a steam train from Woodside.
I remember the bus depot in New Ferry, The little market there where we used to go in the cafe. I can even remember a guy coming around on a bike lighting the gas lamps. Jeez am I really that old?
Pig swill bins being put out for collection. I can vaguely remember RAF West Kirby and certainly RAF lads in New Brighton when they got the odd day off.
New Brighton when it was booming. When it had a proper lifeboat. I was there when they made the film "I thank a fool" in the Tower. I met Paul and George at the back of the Tower while all the silly screaming girls were waiting for them at the front.
I can remember going on trams in Liverpool wiv me mum. One and a scholar she used to say. Me a scholar ha!
Do people remember the Maypole and Costigans? Fantastic places to buy bacon cut on the slicer, sugar loose in blue bags, butter patted to shape and cheese cut from a massive block. Biscuits loose in tins with glass lids on them. "Got any broken biscuits mate?" Health and safety would never allow that now. Not hygenic enough but those shops were scrubbed clean every day. I did it!
I could go on and on but will bore you to death. Sorry!
Apologies NOT required Morseman! A great post which rang lots of bells. I remember the last (steam) train from Seacombe. The diesels started the next day - and people protested! Yes, the smelly pig swill bins with a wierdo lid locking catch.
In Prenton if the wind was in the right direction, you could hear the bursts of machine gun fire at RAF West Kirkby when practising on the range.
Our Co-op in Woodchurch Road had the bulk sugar put into the blue bags (sort of heavy cartridge paper ?) Ditto with the butter as you said.
You paid your money to the assistant. They wrote out your "divi" ticket with the amount of the purchase and your share number. My Mum's was 82755 ? The loot and ticket was put into a metal pot that was screwed onto an overhead trolley. A handle was pulled and the trolley wizzed down a thin wire to a cash desk (always manned by an old bat with specs and a bun) who put the change back in the pot and thwanged in back again. Boy, THAT was high tech stuff !! The Lamson Paragon System I think it was called. (Useless information No. 3289B).
Spent a lot of my school days on the trams. Broke my heart when they finished in September 1957. I had to wait over 30yrs to acheive my ambition to become a tram driver for a living !! Memories of Pier Head to Kirkby Ind. Estate for a 1d child RETURN! (No.19 via Gilmoss)
Uh oh. Here comes nurse with my warm milk and the commode !!
Well, Morseman/Pinzgauer, looks as if we need a new section, probably called The Old Gits or possibly Alzheimer's Division. I remember my mother's divi No., 2928 & my grandma's, 11035 & certainly queueing at the co-op butcher's during the war for some small scrap of an unidentified part of an animal & passing the time by scraping the sawdust into a heap with my shoe. Oh boy, Pinz; there's going to be some fat chewed in a couple of days (provided you're not snowed in by then).
Its wierd.. Reading stuff about the Co-Op's and shops etc.. Know adays food has a Date on it but back in the day it didnt if it was green and smelly then you knew it was off. But what does shake the boat is the fact that Mineral water filtered through mountains and rocks to make that beautful clear water has a Sell By Date.... Bring back the good old days.. The 21st century sucks..

Cheers, Chris.
54501 It was drummed into the kids by their mothers
I used to scrub the floor in the Maypole. Mop it clean and then put fresh sawdust down every night. Not only that but clean the front of the shop to the gutter. Could do with them doing that now!
Wonder if anyone remembers Starbucks bakery in Victoria road New Brighton. Most would know it as the Golden Teapot? Best pies ever for a shilling. We called them cow pies because they were massive and looked a bit like desperate Dan's, sans horns
Nice one Chris. Call it the grumpy old men and women if you want?
