At the time I did a list in Excel and duplicated those pubs with several names - a row for each name
Also if there were 2 addresses for a pub it was duplicated each time with different address
This was for my own benefit so I could do various sorts
eg to find all the pubs in a certain road or street
Sorry if it has been misleading to you
Because of lack of space Mark has had to leave off parts when he transferred the Excel file to plain text

I don't know how far back you can go but
when I worked at the Tanyard a couple of the older men used to tell me of their Tanyard football team (poss prewar late 1930s or during war} which played on jamjar park and could be seen playing there from a pub which became the canteen (when I first started 1962}
It was on New Chester Road nearly opposite Seabank Road which if you looked at the tannery was on the right
Any idea what the pub was called
When I was there what they used to call jamjar park was already built on by Cammell Lairds
Not sure if Pongo Waring played for them

As Derek says above, i couldn't hold his original formatting,
so the list is a simplified one.

As i mentioned with Derek i will refine the list,
and make them easier to understand.

For example :

30 Rock Ferry Hotel 1 Bedford Road
** Royal Rock hotel
32 Admiral Hotel 2 Bedford Road 4 Bedford Road East

Ideally we think listing the public house by

If its still open for business by its current name,
and if its been demolished / closed by its last working name.
And then we will list in the main index its other names too.

There will be gaps in the numbers,
but over time i'm sure we will get them changed back.

Currently : I'm actually "Notifying" the post and telling myself that that post needs to be indexed, i currently have 73 to index but i do know which ones they are, and i will do what i can when
i can, so i'm keeping up with you guys, slowly and surly.

and i will reference those listed. I wont forget, i just need
a Sunday to my self to catch up lol

This must be the area you mean. I happen to have this because my grandmother lived in Seafield House & my grandfather in Clare St. before they married. They then moved to Brougham St. People didn't move far in those days.

what year is your map
Does go any further back along New Chester Road towards the town hall
I'd like to have a good 50s map covering the Priory Buildings and roads from Woodside /Chester Street to Rock Ferry/Old Chester Road

Have you noticed the older ppubs were usually on the corner of two streets or roads
I think on the main road they had a door to the BAR room (it was usually a smoke room and had very few ladies in it)
The other Parlour door would often be in the other street
This would have been where you took your wife or lady friend and
sometimes had Waitress service where you had several pushbutton bells to summon the waitress
One such pub I remember was the Wellington. It was near the old market - The Haymarket?

Sorry, don't know the year & is only a fragment; photographed in the Archives some time ago. I'll see if I've any maps of the area which might be useful to you.

The Birkenhead Arms

The Shakespeare, on King's Square opposite the main Birkenhead Market steps and next to the tunnel entrance, pictured in 1961. This pub was known locally as 'The Big Shakey' to distinguish it from the other Shakespeare pub not far away on the corner of Waterloo Place / Chester Street - which was known as 'The Little Shakey.'
