On the Birkenhead Road leading into Hoylake as you pass Manor road on the left hand side there use to be a pub called the Lighthouse Inn. It was a birkenhead Brewery pub and the licensee was a woman called Ma Barlow, she was my great aunt and i had a weeks summer holiday there every year from 1944 till 1950.

"The Lighthouse Inn was a beerhouse which once stood in Market Street, Hoylake, on a site which is now the entrance to the car park between Lee Road and Waverley Road. The publican at the time was Mary Brent - note lack of pavement or road surface."
Gores directory of 1900 shows the above beer house been run by Joseph G Barlow and he is listed as a beer seller. In 1902, 1906, 1910 and 1914 it is in the directories as being run by the same Joe Barlow and he is listed as Beer Retailer. Then in 1938 Directory the establishment is name as The Lighthouse Inn and being run my the late Joe Barlows Wife {my great aunt} Elizabeth Barlow. It would be interesting to find out when Birkenhead Brewery licensed the beer house into a public house. There were lots of beer houses in Birkenhead and surrounding area that must also have changed from Beer houses to Public houses.
