Where they in the fields leading up to Storeton Woods? Did they have some concrete ramps and rooms with steel doors?? Was there an old house with a sort of courtyard? Because I certainly remember when I used to play in Storeton Woods going to some sort of complex with concrete ramps and mybe air raid shelters and an real old house not far away.

If it's this, it was the abandoned radar station. I used to play there myself. A lot of the equipment had been left inside. There was a tall mast too, like an electricity pylon. I don't remember the old house though. Although there's not a trace of it now, the access gate is still used to get into the field.

Thanks for that Chris, it about clears up that little mystery in my mind. Now the only other thing is the old house. Oh well....

thats the right one chris but i only remember the two lower buildings on your map,so maybe the single building was knocked down earlier than the other two, dont remember ever seeing any sorts of equipment in there either, the gap between the two where the track went was the gap we used to jump.i spent a really nice day at the old childrens hospital on woodchurch road with smashed knee caps after i missed one day.had a full leg splint on for two months and could only sit on the toilet with my legs up in the air.lol

I probably knew this place before you all; late 1940's. There was loads of stuff in there at that time. Here's an aerial photo taken by the RAF in May 1948. The scale is about 5800:1

It's more a matter of having time to find stuff & knowing where to look. Because I'm retired, I've got the time; if I weren't 50 miles away, I'd be in the archives every day!

A Friend of mine who sadly passed away earlier last year was in the Home Guard and his duty station was guard detail at that radio comunication station at the top of the mile road

I remember seeing them through the trees years back, wondering what they were. I recall similar structures off Woodchurch Rd in a field, near where the railway pases over the road and junction 3 roundabout. Was there anything military there?

I've checked the Defence of Britain Project on Google Earth and there's nothing there. Hmmm think

if you where looking in the field on the Birkenhead side of the railway line then what you could see was the old manweb power supply station which has been replaced by the one down Prenton Dell on the old brickworks site

If you were looking at the fields on your right after going under the brige coming from Birkenhead there used to be the clubhouse for the Birkenhead Institute Old Boys Rugby teams
Later when they were demolished 2 metal containers were put there to be used by Glenavon youth teams as dressing rooms
I,m not if they were eventually removed because plans were
said to build a railway station there
