It was shot down by Hurricanes of a Czech squadron based at Speke. It crash landed at Bromborough dock. I went to see it after it had been put on display at the Oval. Just Google "Ju88 Bromborough" & you'll learn all about it.

Cheers, Chris.

Hi All and especially to digging deeper. I am grateful as I was not too sure where the site actually was. I have read all the other links as stated on the thread previously. Once again thanks to the Wirral History site great resource. Any other information gratefully received

I don't know if that is where the Junkers ended up, it's the only HAA site in the area, but I have never seen anything about smaller AA guns around the Wirral, there may not have been any because we would only get bombers over here and they aren't going to be skimming the trees usually.

Anyway I have found some text referring to the landing site which would indicate it was in the Bromborough Pool area, if I find a suitable map I will post that later.

"I've just re-checked the info you posted on the JU88 crash, and located the spot more accurately now. On the 1:50,000 map I e-mailed you, you will see a symbol, underneath the words 'Bromborough Pool', that looks like a small black spot with a cross on the top; this represents a church with a spire, which I am virtually sure was not there at the time (I'll have this confirmed fairly soon). Go to the right of this church, and you will see a double line, representing a road, which bends 90 degrees to the left, towards north west, above the 'pink' looking rectangles representing a built-up area; none of these were there at the time, and it is in this approximate area where the JU88 came down."

"A little bit more news. I've been able to look at the Ordnance Survey map for 1948 (the previous one was 1932 I think), and I can confirm that the church I pointed out was NOT there, and the whole area was open at the time of the JU88's crash-landing. The dock area was not as developed, and, when I am able to obtain a copy of the map, I should be able to mark the area fairly accurately."

The crash site is now enclosed by railings you cant actually get to it. Its just behind where all the fisherman sit at Brom dock.

Dava 249 is the man to speak to about the location, give him a shout. I believe the family of the Czech pilots still live locally today. Iv got a description of the event and some picture on my web site.

Hi Dr

Sorry I do not know the area and I do not know where the fishermen sit, can you please give me another clue. By the way there appears some confusion as one of the crew died was there 4 on board?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Doodlebug,

Just found your question - sorry about the delay in response....

Did you ever get an answer to this one? (My father lived very nearby and actually witnessed the crash as a 12 year old - he knows precisely where it ended up, because he 'liberated' the wingtip and made off with it - it included the landing light, the bulb stated - 'OSRAM Made in England'!!!. It's been lost over the years tho'

I can ask him about the location if you still need the info)

BTW, I believe two of the crew died, buried in Hooton Cem - but later re-interred in Germany (I think)

Cheers,
Billy.
