There can be nothing underground connecting Bidson and Wallasey as Wallasey and Bidson are basically a lumps of sandstone. Any tunnels between Bidson and Wallasey would be below the water table.

I think you may find that was a proposal that was never carried out, however, in years gone by before any docks it is possible to trace a continuos water run from leasowe to birkenhead, so yes Wallasey was an island and probably was for a short time after the docks were built.

and in the dim and distant past Wallesy wasn't totally an island but the whole area of Bidston Moss and around the J1 retail park was marshland right up to the dunes that the golf courses at New Brighton and Leasowe are on so it was effectively an island.

I read about that mad plan (18th centuary I think) to extend the docks all the from bidston through to the inlet that is now filled-in to make Hoylake and string a sea wall out to Hilbre from Red Rocks and where the marine lake is now to make a huge dock system to rival London with a deep water entrance open all the time. Imagine how differant the Wirral would be if that had happened......

Havent seen this mentioned on here before so I thought I would let people know,
I Just happened to see a dvd last night called "of time and the city"
Only took a peek because it was supposed to have some old footage of Liverpool in it.

The blurb for the DVD says
"Terence Davies returns to his native Liverpool and to his film making roots to capture a sense of the City today and its influences on him growing up in the late 40's and early 50's."

Actually there is lots of achive footage, some from the Wirral...
There is Colour film of New Brighton fair, Tower and all
and the Lido..
lots of other gems and the quality is really good.

you can check out a few stills on the website
http://www.oftimeandthecity.com/

have to say the commentary is not to my taste, so I ended up turning the sound down and putting some music on, but as I say some footage which will definately be of interest to some on here.

Hi, I just joined this list today and love it. I am going back to earlier messages, sorry. I remember the allotments at the Mount Estate because we moved there in 1950/51 and they were at the corner (?) of Mendip and Storeton Road at that time.
I remeber going to the pictures at the Gaumont on Borough Road (?).
I remember going to the Majestic and the Tower Ballroom (early 60`s)to see Gerry, Billy J Kramer etc.
I remember the coffee house in the outside corner of the Woodside Ferry terminal.

Boy is this all bringing back memories.

Yes, welcome. The Gaumont was on Park Rd. East, it was the Plaza on Borough Rd; I was a projectionist there in about 1953. I remember too when the whole of Mount Estate was allotments. The estate was built very soon after the war, about 1947-48.
Enjoy your stay here, there's loads of interesting stuff & maybe you can fill in a few gaps.

Cheers, Chris.

The roads for the mount estate where laid by x german prisoners of war. A lot of people may not know that prisoners of war where still in this country for many years once the war was over. They where legaly employed on road works throughout the country before been sent back to germany.
