Dammit, I check this place thread out regularly and nobody ever spots me, even when I have spotted them.

Starting to get upset.

These two today - not sure if they belong to anyone on here or not but the MG was nice (not something I will very often say about an MG) and the Evo sounded as good as she looked!! Sweet as - it made me do a SW laugh !!!

Indeed... one of the greatest British cars (though funded by BMW, designed and developed by Rover - anyone who says its a 5-Series is chatting bubbles - the only thing the two had in common was the satnav system they both shared). A car built and priced solely to take on the X-Type but unintentionally matched the S-Type in every respect.

Of course Craig, it doesn't have an Ikea style black/gray wheelie bin dashboard, and doesn't look like every other car on the road, so it was always destined for failiure in this very fickle society we live in (along with a little bit of help from a very suspiciously ill timed announcement by a certain BMW CEO named Bernd Pischetsrieder). Amazingly, the German public have a lot more respect and appreciation for the 75, than people over here, and look what marques they have! But then they can think for themselves, and don't follow their peers like sheep.

And then we have the ZT... All the refinement of the 75, but with a sporting edge to it. The ZT-265 was of course the flagship model, but it is a crying shame X-Power and Prodrive never got to finish the aptly named "M5 Basher", aka the supercharged ZT-385... There are, unbelievably, a few on our roads today, but the untrained eye almost certainly wouldnt notice, until it was too late anyway.

You want road presence? Unless you happen to drive a car costing £75k+, it doesnt get any better than the beautiful styling and deep throated purr of the Rover 75 V8, now I wonder where Audi got their inspiration from for their current styling that everyone now seems to adore, simply because it has an Audi badge on it... Looking for something more sleek, how about the 75 Coupe, now that was just rude!

Shame they went under, looking at the RDX60 (Rover 45 replacement) which has become the Roewe N1 and the Roewe 550 (Rover 55) (Craig - keep your eyes peeled for one of these, there is two driving around Preston) and Roewe W2 (MGZ?), all based upon the 75 (though admittadly the RDX65 was basically an entirely new format).

Of course its the Chinese who are finishing off the development started by Rover, and we have our wonderful Labour government to thank for that! It's no secret that Rover developed the MINI, and the BMW 1-Series (Rover R30)... if only BMW hadnt tried to leach every good thing out of them, before they got rid. They only took Land Rover under their wing, so they could develop the X5...

Rover simply wanted a 600 replacement, built in collabaration with Honda, just like the previous 600, they were together developing the next Accord. Then BMW entered and spilt the party. So BMW set their sights higher, and decided upon a sole objective, "to build the worlds best FWD car". And a lot would say Rover delivered.

BMW wonder why they lost so many millions during their ownership of Rover? Giving engineers who carry such high aspirations, an open cheque book, is never a good thing to do.

Killed before its time? That's not what the Chinese think.

Some great posts about the 75 off the MGR forums...

I wanted a car that looked like a poor mans's Bentley (or as I've been told - a Rolls Royce!) when all around me wanted boring Ikea-style machinery with slap-on Fablon pretend wood/alloy/carbon and frankly cheap and nasty interiors - as they still do."

Rovers, for people with nothing to prove!

Yes, excellent. The ZT/75 is indeed a nice place to be. I think sometimes, prospective owners get frightened by some of the posts on the forum, but for every negative experience, there are a thousand un-posted positive ones. Just returned from a short trip, and the feeling of superiority over my fellow road users got stronger as the trip proceeded. The supreme calm within the Rover, as we watched the "hot hatch brigade" struggling to maintain a decent pace without damaging their hearing. The comfort and individuality, as we watched the hundreds of Astra and Mondeo drivers cast envious glances as we wafted past them. The feel and smell of warm, heated leather, as the Laguna and Toyota drivers brushed desperately at the sauce smeared cloth seats at the McDonalds drive through.

The slight smirk at the 5 series Beamer drivers, as we glided past the Shell station, where they furiously coaxed the pumps to work faster, so that they could hurtle past us before once more watching our stately progress, as they stood on the next forecourt. The relaxed hands on the wood and leather steering wheel , the soft purr of the mighty CDTI, as we observed the white knuckle grips and staring eyes of those less fortunate than ourselves. The occasional flash of headlights and casual wave of recognition, from complete strangers, who only wanted to say " Hello friend, I've got a Rover too.". And after parking it up for the night, the comment from the kind passer-by, informing me that I have left my lights on; to which I replied "Its okay, it's a Rover 75, it knows what to do"... and with that, it quietly blinked to sleep.

As Alfred Lord Tennyson once said "If I'd been born 200 years later, I'd have got me a Rover 75"

Now, im tired after all that, wheres me pipe and slippers, because "above all, its a Rover!".

Couldnt agree more...

BMW drivers, impatient pr*cks who deserve thrashing at any opportunity...

Like me in the Alfa, Rover and Alfa are very underestimated, yet people who drive them know differently. Love the idea of not following the rest of the herd like sheep, and being part of something other than just driving a car. Buying a car, believe it or not, says a lot about our character. To buy one of these sorts of cars usually says that we actually like cars, and care about what we buy etc. Not just after something thatll get us from A to B.. or get us to pick the kids up from school.

Like my Dad, when everyone was buying estates and MPVs to carry the kids round in, we had the MG ZS... smiling to ourselves as we drove round the place, knowing that people were envious as we were different and stood out, but still performed family duties and tasks...

Alfa drivers flash and wave regulalrly, cos we're part of a family of car enthusiasts, not just people who think "Oh, a car is a car.. just for moving round the place" If thats the case, go buy a Kia raftl

Rover... long may they live in our hearts. and Ill deffo be on the lookout for the Roewes... although Im not in preston for much longer frown

One thing I have "never" understood, is why people buy cars like Corsa's brand new, when there so much better in the used car market...

I was sniffing around a trophy blue ZS-115 the other day, thinking how I might stick to my beloved L-Series, but I don't think it will happen. After having driven one for quite some time, its got to be either a 75 CDTi (conservative option) or a ZT 1.8T (fun option) for my next car.Id actually love a CDTi Auto, its how a 75 should be driven, but got a thing about autobox reliability...

Can't believe ye can get brand new 75 V8's for £5000, and their only 4mpg less than the 150bhp 2.0 and 190bhp 2.5 KV6! Insurance don't share my ideal's however.

Gimme an Alfa 166 over any of the equivalent Deutschland (sp?) models anyday! Mind you, I do have a soft spot for mercs. Since Audi's started looking like the 75 V8, drivers of them make even BMW and Mondeo drivers look like angels.

smile

Every time I've had a bike accident (bar one who was in a VW on German plates), it's been a "R" driver!! A friend was beheaded on his bike by an elderly "R" driver who could only just about see over the dash!!

I just can't stand them!

Rover where always ahead of the pack technology wise and always made brilliant cars even when they werent clever cars. They did have flaws of course, but never Rovers fault itself. Always down to BL or BMW. Look at the SD1, brill car, same with the variable valve timing they introduced aswell as the 75, a brilliant and this time underestimated car.

Id love a 75 V8. Theres just something right about them isnt there!

I HATE cars.
