There's a place down near Bidston tip that advertises "Free top soil".
Has anyone tried it?
I know you only get what you pay for but it breaks my heart to pay for bags of mud at the garden centre!!!

A mate in work had some from there. Said it wasn't the best soil in the world but it was just as good as some that he HAD paid for in the past. Think it's free but you have to shift it for yourself.
