Yep - a lot of people lived like that - were always keen to get their hands on anything gold because the pawnbroker would definately accept it. The losses of continually putting items into and out of pawn is unbelievable. Eventually when their luck is down, they don't have the money to redeem the pawned item, this is bound to happen sooner or later. Yes I find it sad as well.

Anybody remember the British Legion club in Bebington? I think it was at the end of Kings Rd where it joins Town lane. I checked Google, but there are too many new houses and lost me bearings. Must be old age?? Anyway I used to play in a band up there with a guy called Arthur Sherlock(great voice). We were called Arthur and the Ragamuffins(well, it was the 60's).

the British Legion in Bebington is still open, your right about its location in that its a few yard further along from the top of Town lane. Its at the bottom of Village Road on the opposit corner from the Acorn pub. there has been a lot of trouble in the club with the ... bag yobs picking on the old members, this was during last year.

I can remember one relative who went to put his suit on for a night out and it was too late, it was pawned in the pawn shop on Watson Street so that his missus could go to Bingo. Times were hard, groceries on tick until the bill couldn't be settle so you then was told to go to another shop and run the bill up there. They were all settled eventually, just not on time. Go and see Mrs X and ask her if I can borrow half a dollar till payday? Interest was always exacted of course but we wouldn't have survived without these usurers.

The cinema near Argos was the Ritz; I know because I was a projectionist there for about a year. The manager's name was Bill Boht. Since tis is an unusual name, I think he was related to Jean Boht (Bread), maybe her father.

Hi sorry to reply to a post from two years ago ;-) Just found this site from researching the Wirral.

My Mum remembers Bill Boht well. Dapper man, German born, was interned on the Isle of Man during the war. Managed a lot of Birkenhead nightspots and was married to Jean Boht of 'Bread' fame - her maiden name was Dance. For some reason they split and Bill apparently fell on hard times while Jean went on to fame and fortune...

She was Head Girl at my school laugh As was Hyacinth Bouquet apparently. The Legion in Bebington is where I learnt Judo as a kid. Used to be given 50p so I could get a glass of coke when we had a break.

in reply to the query on page 19 of this thread as to the meaning of the CH letters on the canopy over a shopfront, i deal in antique jewellery and guess this is a jewellery shop as the CH is the logo for charles horner jewellery which had its heyday in the art nouveau art deco era but continued making jewellery up to the 1950/60s, this shop may have been a outlet for charles horner wares amongst other brands , if you check out silver charles horner items of jewellery the logo is EXACTLY the same

I remember the Ritz when they had an organ which used to come up out of it's pit during the interval. Also remember seeing Joseph Loock(e) the Irish tenor doing a cameo performance before he disppeared back to Ireland under a cloud of something I never found what! My Dad used to tell me of the night the Ritz was hit by a bomb when he was a bobby during WW2. The bomb came through the screen and he was amongst the unenviable lot who had to clear the remains out of the place.

Our Saturdays were mainly at the other end of the scale, The Rio at the top of Price Street, over Duke Street and past the library, bit of a flea pit. We used to bunk in if we could, or we'd club together to get one in and they would sneak the fire door open, behind the curtain and we would creep in once the lights were out. Heck of a clout on the ear if you got caught though. Run home down the hill with your raincoat on one top button round your neck and you was Zorro. Mad but great.

I think that might might have been the Classic opposite - I remember going to see a double bill of Alien and The Fog - which was not on in the daytime......

The warehouse type buildings on the land backing onto Eccleshall Road in New Ferry. Near the big hill.

Always wondered what all that lot used to be.
