I remember when Townfield Lane used to be a dirt track called Flat Lane. It was one of the roughest roads I'd ever seen. As you walked down the lane there was countryside on both sides. I remember on the left hand side as you walked down, it looked like a forest on a hill it was so open. I think the trees where the backs of peoples gardens on the top of the hill. On the right hand side it was all one big building site. Loads of people working to build the houses that are there now. Down at the end where the school is it was just a big open field with a small pond. I was up there a lot with my mates on our bikes in the summer. Does anyone else remember that?

Welcome to wiki.
Yes, I think quite a few of us remember that. In my case, back to before there was even any thought of building there, and before Woodchurch estate was built. In those days you could walk down there & as far as Arrowe Park without seeing a house.

Chris, us to go blackberry picking along the flat lanes 1946 to 1949 with my dad. It was a god walk up from lower tranmere and then back again with the old dry milk tins full of blackberries, and in a sack so as to carry the tins home.

Talking of Townfield Lane, is it true only one property has the postal address, Townfield Lane, This supposedly came about by the person who sold the land had a bungalow built and wanted it to be the only one with the Townfield address.

Yes, long walk, Jim. Good memories of those days. I remember the dried milk tins too.

Here's a few memories of the early Noctorum estate . We moved up there from Crown Street in early 68-I think we were one of the first families to move in . We lived in Neville Close right opposite the site offices and I used to play on the diggers and other vehicles - paradise for a nipper!Further up what was Newstead Way , there was a field with a pond and the remains of a fence .We used to crawl under a hedge and play on St Anselm's playing field until chased away by the groundsman . Coming from 'downtown' this was almost semi-rural - at that time the Nocky didn't have a bus service - that arrived in '71 I think .I went to Manor County school on the Ford until Hillside opened for business in '69 . That was an experience-a lot of 'posh' kids from Beryl Road and the surrounding areas went there too - They probably didn't know what hit them (I remember a few doctor's kids went there !). We spent hours in the Mops - you couldn't get into Bidston Court at the time - at least not legitimately. For ages there was only one shop on the estate (Harry Bird's)in Newport Close - otherwise it was a walk up Noctorum Avenue. Upton Station still had a ticket office and my mum wouldn't let me walk to Upton library because there was no pavement on that side of the road . The farm on the site of where the Stiles was built was still there - but not for long .
There used to be an annual gymkhana near where Ridgway School is now (the old grandstand stood for years)-anyone remember that?
Anyway , I think that's enough for now - hope I've stirred a few memories.

As an ex-St.Anselm's sports day sufferer, I'd like to know exactly where the playing field was. I vaguely remember it was well ploughed up just post-war, 1945, and may have been an army or gun site. We did a cross-country run from there, apart from the rugby but I don't remember any 'facilities'! Any memories from that era would be appreciated.

I remember being taken to the Gymkhana. The corpy buses had "TO THE SHOW" on the blind (got one of the blinds in the loft). The main thing I remember was the parade of floats around the ring and the Ladies and Gents mobile bogs. Two pre-war Leyland buses, painted vomit cream and towed to the showground. I can smell them now. Pewk !!! I remember the stand too. Green corrugated iron job with plank seating.

Who Remembers..........

I think it was called "Kennys".
It was a small factory that manufacured model sailing boats (out of wood - not palstic).
If my memory is correct, it was quite close to the old peanut factory (sun valley I think).
Pics would be great...

Put 'Star Yacht Company' in Google and you'll get the full story.
I had the 'Meteorite' many years ago! Wondering what happened to it, as usual!

There's at least 6 in various conditions on ebay. Great for a 'kid's' present!
There's a photo in one of the 'Yesterday's Wirral' books, I think, of the staff outside the factory.
