It's become more attractive to me to drink in the house, I've got my films and tv to watch, can do it in the warmth, no need to get a taxi to get home. I can fall asleep pissed on my sofa with only the stairs to get up to go to bed.

Pubs are far too expensive, the money i'd spend going out, I could buy a week's worth of food shopping.

I bet internet dating has had a lot to do with the decline of nightclubs like Rockys and Ruperts.

these days the clubs, pubs seem to be full of kids gettin drunk.if we go out on the rare occasion of a babysitter we tend to go to the liverpool rigbys in dale street & then on to matthew street.it always seems a better atmosphere over there, our two older kids always went to liverpool when they were younger and never had any bother.

Smoking ban and beer prices are part of the problem. Old estates going and no business' is another. Don't forget that everything is so expensive these days, fuel, mortgages, food, etc that people don't have the money to go out anymore. The average bod is being screwed over by the banks and big multi-nationals for their profit.

It appears that most pubs that are surviving are:

1) in some popular place
2) being refurbished every few years
3) Offering cheap bar food
4) selling ale at a relatively comptetive price
5) backed by a major brewer

I live near the Saddle and I often think that place could do so much more with what it has if the re-decorated and promoted their pub food with a good menu. Place seems to do ok with the function suite though.

the old quay in parkgate seems to do well.they serve a carvery at a decent price, my hubby asked how many turkeys do they get through, they said about 20 on a busy day. when weve been its always seemed busy the food is nice, kids like the idea of choosing there own food.the drinks prices arent to bad either.

Yes, i've heard myself that the old Quay goes through Turkeys like it's Christmas. I remember going in there late evening on day and it looked like Club 18-30 had just held a food fight! Roasties all over the floor.

I think too many pubs try to have joint identity, you can't be a working mans piss-house, a young peoples disco and a family restaurant at the same time.

I think one of the only exception is the Swan because it has the two rooms.

I remember working there about 16 years ago and an old guy complained because he thought his pint was too warm. "No problem" I said "I'll get you another from the pump from next door". I simply went through from the lounge to the bar, waited a bit and came back out with the same pint. "much better" the customer said and hapily drank the lot.

One Christmas day was another memorable occasion. "Help yourself" prompted the land lady after the festive shift. Unfortunately for me, I passed out on free triple Southern Comforts and missed the rest of the celebrations.

Last time we went out 'local' was '98-99. Most local pubs now have been closed/ took over by deadheads or torched!!'
