Biggest load of money wasters I looked it up a while back on English Heritage site - no listing at all on the workhouse building - I guess there must be plenty of examples around so this one wasn't needed...

'They' have kept the original workhouse entrance and plan to incorporate it into the new building. I hear its being stored on sight at the mo. It was there 'in situ' for much of the demolition but then removed, for fear of damage.

There are another 4 or 5 original artefacts also to be kept. Of top of my head, the entrance at church rd is another.

Update. The features to be incorporated into the new building are the gate house, entrance arch, a cornerstone, a decorative feature plaque and a door headstone.

Been on site here today, had a walk round the block that is still standing, Remaining block is due to come down at the end of this month. It's was like going back a hundred odd years in time, very impressive.

I nursed there in the 1960s, the last time I was there was about 1984 to visit my dad,who died on the same ward that I worked on,it's so sad and now it's all gone as though none of that ever happened, but I suppose we all have to move on.

I took my nursing final exams at St Caths in 1972. I visited for many meetings in later years. A sad loss of another historic building. I do hope they have ethically and carefully deposited any information, (paperwork, records etc) with the local archives or another part of our history will be lost.
