The school opened at the same time that the boarding school opened in 1863, at first it occupied part of the priest's house. The school moved into its 'new' building in 1871, this was greatly extended in 1914. St Joseph's school moved to its new building on Moreton Road in 1966.
The old building is still standing and is now used by Upton Hall School.
thanks george ,a few names, john allen, david dyble, alastair gow, billy ross, sally vickery, violet harrigan, speedy of course, these are from 1952-1958. i cant think of many but would remember iff reminded. find it very difficult to get photos of people,or the school itself.
Hi just been reading this thread and found it very interesting looking at the school were my dad used to go. According to the dates you have mentioned I can only assume the people listed were his class mates!!!! His name is Bruce Hogan and I wonder if anyone remembers him?!?!?! I think he is on the picture in the play ground! Lovely picture to see! Thanks
I went to The Woodlands primary (the original victorian building between bourgh road and the Woodlands)it was a spooky old building with a swimming pool the size of a hot tub behind the canteen. Our year was the last to leave for high school before they relocated to Whestone Lane.
Went there myself Chris, left 86'. Have a look at the photos on The Woodlands Facebook page, loads of good photos.
There's a bloody good footy team on there now ,;-))
Still no contact with any of the lads who i went to school with in Hemmy 1950 -1955 upper 4a To mention a few Norman Lewis ,Robert Hughes ,Tommy Woods ,Maurice Cartwright Peter Faulkner ,Oscar Mckay,Brian Moore ,Eddie Shields & Brian Forrester Does anybody know whats happened to the lads from that er George Hayes
George, Eddie Shields died years ago, I'm assuming he's the same one, he knew Chewy Lyons, the last one i told you who died, Eddie lived in the high rise flats that used to be by the Pilot, Duke St. probably the same bloke. As far as i know he went to Hemmy with Chewy.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
You are correct Eddie was a big mate of Chewy Lyons I think at one time Eddie lived off Oliver st near were Chewy lived in Wilson st, the last time i saw Eddie was in the Grange on Charing Cross having a pint ,that could have been between 30 to 40 yrs ago I have not lived in Birkenhead since 1962 i only got to see mates on my vists back home Thanks for the info its most welcome as i have not had much luck searching myself Cheers George
That's right George, i drank with Eddie in the Grange, when it was knocked down we moved to the Labour club( The York) Grange Rd, time flies, he died of throat cancer about 15-20 years ago. Went the match with him as well, good Blue.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.
I went to Withensfield Middle School from 1981 to 1982, it is where Liscard Primary is now. There is a Centenary Summer Fair on 16 July and an open evening on 19 July from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. All former staff and pupils are welcome to take a tour of the building.
