Had a wonder down clifton Road after visiting Masonic Temple.
I can vaguely remember what I thought was a TA building there as I used to go to BI school via Clifton rd.
Some newish buildings in the road now but I think this may be the nearest to what I saw

The side ally as you call it is Wellington Terrace, the house in Clifton Rd with the Camel above the door was once the residence of F E Smith, Lord Birkenhead. if my memory serves me right.

Did the brethren show you around the temple after all then Derek?
What did you think?

Quite nice and tidy,it wasn't really what I thought a Masonic Temple would look like inside.
I did ask a few questions about the ranks and uniforms and the date it was bought but that info wasn't available (was told to look on ebay to see)
Was told the Oliver Street Masonic was more decorative, but no info about a possible visit there.Pics up later

HELLO,Picture of the old army building in Brookland Rd/Clifton Rd.Two tanks where parked inside and about six Bedford wagons. On a Sunday morning the tanks would leave the base and go down Brooland Rd in to the Woodlands on to Brough Rd and up to Arrowe Park.Arrowe Park Hospital stands in what use to be an M.O.D Training Ground. They got rid of the tanks after one fell throug the road (Brookland). The photo with Operatic sign on the side was the rifle range. The tall one at the back was admin
and the two houses in Clifton Road belonged to the Officers all the foors are concrete because the ammo was kept in there.

Spot on Bert, 42 Clifton Road was indeed the childhood home of F E Smith; the family moved to there from his birthplace in Pilgrim Street when he was quite young, and he lived there during the time he was at Birkenhead School.

My Grandad lived on Clifton road when he was a teenager and into his early 20s I think... Would have been in the late 40s early 50s

Don't know the number though frown
Sorry not really relevant to the thread!

I love the buildings in Clifton Road, would love to have a nosey inside and learn more about the history of each. I know that Fearnley Hall in The Woodlands was built in 1843 so I think a lot of the local buildings might be about that age also. I happen to own the only flat in Fearnley Hall that still has the original features, painted over (not by me). Coving, ceiling rose, shutters etc. But also has 2 carved heads either side of an arch, like on the pics above. There are also 2 heads by the main front door. There should be a book, just on the buildings of Birkenhead!
