My laptop has stop all update eg (firefox, google Chrome avg and malwarebytes) the only thing that works is internet explorer ( which I don't like) I can download movies and mps but it wouldn't let me update a thing
done scans with avg in safe mode and reg mode it didn't find a thing wrong
same with malwarebytes
it's doing my head in now as I know something is wrong but can't work it out.
What are you using to update? Firefox Chrome AVG (which you need to remove) and malwarebytes don't update through the windows updater, they use their own internal update engines. The windows updater doesn't update much of anything useful, I'd get it disabled and forget about it. You're probably safer with it disabled anyway.
I don't think that's really the right word for it, considering you can look up factual studies and comparisons yourself that show how useless it is. There's loads of free AV that don't suck.
If you've never had a problem with AVG my suggestion is you know how to browse safely, so you'd probably be just as fine with no AV. Food for thought anyway.
Hang on, you're using AVG and Avast. (AND malwarebytes?!) You can only run 1 AV and 1 firewall at a time mate. You can't be running windows own and avast together or they just won't do anything (at best) and at worst will just conflict every time anything comes up and have a fit.
I tried firefox I download it when I try to get any webpage apart from the firefox home page it says it can't be found, the only thing that is letting me do anything is IE I'll go try opera im scaning with the link exo put up so have to wait
First uninstall everything you're using except for Malwarebytes (since that's a malware scanner and standalone).
Install MSE from the link above and let it update and scan. Do it from safe mode with networking if it fails to update or install from a normal desktop. If it does fail you've got some kind of virus and you need to do a full scan with MSE and Malwarebytes and some sort of anti-spyware scanner wouldn't hurt. Do those scans from safe mode and they should get rid of any nasties. If it doesn't fail to install/update on a normal desktop don't bother doing more than a quick scan.
If you're going to use a firewall use comodo or something. It'll slow down the machine and cause you more trouble than I think it's worth, but it'll give you an extra layer of security if you need it. Does your router have a firewall? I'd guess it probably does and that'll keep you safe on its own if you want to forget about firewalls all together.
Pick which browser you intend to use and uninstall it from the control panel. Go re-download it and install it so it won't need updating.
That's what I'd do if you brought the machine to me and paid me to fix it, anyway.
