One o'clock gun is fired again by Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton
A Mersey maritime tradition the one o’clock gun is being recreated by Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton this week.
A cannon will be fired from the former coastal defence battery at 1pm every day during the half term school holidays.
The one o’clock gun was a tradition which lasted for more than a century and was fired every day from the river wall at Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead , to help ships check the time.
The service continued until 1969, despite the introduction of radio time signals.
Fort Perch Rock curator Doug Darroch said: “We tend to fire the cannon on major occasions, like when the great ships come in or on Remembrance Sunday.
“This time we decided to do it during the school holidays. A lot of people expect the Fort to fire a cannon.
“It was quite a loud bang and I think some people were shocked by it - some came into the Fort to ask about it.”
