Leasowe Lighthouse will be open on Sunday from 12.00 - 4.00pm. Come and visit, have a cuppa, and for a small charge (£2 adults, £1 children) have a guided tour to the lamproom at the top. All our guides are volunteers and like nothing better than to tell visitors all about the Lighthouse, its history, its keepers and its purpose.

If you enjoy yourself, why not join the Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse, and, if you think you can help in the cafe, as a guide, or as a meeter/greeter why not become a volunteer. After all, it's just 4 hours, once a month and you would be helping to preserve this very important landmark.

Why is it so important, well come along on Sunday and we'll tell you!

True dave, there is a height restriction (not an age restriction). There is plenty to see on the ground floor and you will not be charged if your child is too small to climb to the top. There are a lot of stairs for little legs, and adults need hands for the railing so can't carry. We had a group of 58 school children visit last week, some of the 5/6 year olds found it hard to reach the second floor and would have taken an age to reach the top. We work on the system that if the child is as tall as the counter (normal work surface height), then they are tall enough to climb the 130 steps to the top without causing such a delay that other groups are affected - not only is it unlucky to pass on the staircase - at Leasowe it is impossible smile

staying on the ground floor defeats why i took the kids in the first place, hence the warning!

@Ste, I think the plumbing would frighten off all but the hardiest.

@Dave, I passed your comments on, in full, at the Lighthouse this morning. They appreciated exactly where you are coming from and completely understand your frustration. There is a new website under construction and this will provide a full 'your visit' page, which will highlight the height restriction and point out other safety restrictions (no stilettos, no flip flops etc.)

Please bear with us whilst we try to get this right.

Hi 2/-. Normally during the winter, we open on the first Sunday of every month from 12.00 - 4.00, BUT, since the first Sunday of January is Sunday 1st, we thought that both our visitors and us would be too 'tired' to climb all that way.

So, as a special one off, we are opening on Monday 2nd January from 11.00 - 3.00pm for tours and refreshments.

Will see if I can make it on 2nd Jan as I have never been in this Lighthouse.

Did you get many visitors today, as the weather was horrible?

Never been inside Leasowe Lighthouse so will try to make Jan 2nd. It's a really striking local landmark so well done Samsamsam for helping keep it open. Hope your group is really successful.

@pax - I don't know, I was spared guiding duties today because I took the 58 li'l darlings round on Thursday, but the sleet was horizontal when I left at 12.00. I did ask the cafe volunteers to ask any visitors where they heard about the Lighthouse though, just keeping tabs grin .

@touchstone - The Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse were formed in 1989, but we always need new blood as do all voluntary organisations, especially in today's economic climate with Council cutbacks - hope you can make it on the 2nd - think of the good it will do you climbing all those stairs!
