A little puzzle, got this through the other day, I'm fairly sure I know where the shop was but so far the bridge has beaten me, I have reason to believe it is not the obvious one.

Here is the text that came with it.

Quote
I don't know if this is of interest, this is my Nan's old shop (A.Stanworth), it was located close to Birkenhead North station, not sure if it was on Station Road, photo is late 40's / early 50's. Found it in my late Dad's photo's. Shop was a general store/ corner shop. 2nd photo is inside the shop
3rd photo is also in that area - you might be able to place it.
I grew up in Birkenhead, left when I was nine, in my minds eye I can see where the photo is but can't place it exactly.

Possible Bridge location?

Stanley Rd/Wallasey Bridge Rd, though I think the present day bridge has more panels.
1938,

1938,

The problem is the road where the photographer is standing, there is no corresponding road that close to a bridge until you get to Tweed Street/Lincoln Street and I'm not convinced that is the right one either.

The bridge is Ilchester Rd, the picture taken from Station Rd
And the picture of the shops is Station Rd with Ilchester rd in the background.

I remember them shops when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, although they where closed by then and boarded up. The shops followed the curve of the pavement from Station Rd onto Ilchester Rd and if I recall correctly there was a bookies and a small convenience store on the Ilchester Rd part of the curve.

Yes, I will go with that, well done! I had a perspective problem with the house on Ilchester and the Tweed Street maisonettes.

If I'd put my thinking cap on I should have recognised the Trent Street maisonettes as I used to have a friend that lived in them, it used to worry me parking in the back road but there was never a problem. When tenants left there was usually very little copper pipe or wire left, door locks had already been drilled by the eleccy man etc.

The betting shop was called Murphys. You can see from the picture of the bridge on the left hand side the roof of the remaining house belonging to Charlie Right, the area is currently being transformed to be called The Docklands new homes started wont be a patch on the ones they pulled down, just tiny boxes.

Is that the bookies to the left of Stanworths following the curve of the pavment?
Charlie Wrights house is further down the road on the left. The house in the picture is long gone.
Regarding building the new estate, it is about time. It annoys me when they knock down perfectly good homes and just leave the area a barren place.
I dropped my card into the site office in February but obviously didn't get the job, didn't even get a look in and I live on its door step. The subby is a manchester based company, not happy.
