I am also new to metal detecting and from what I've been advised it is best to join a local club as they are the font of all knowledge and will help you keep within the law. Wirral council will not allow any metal detecting on any of their land including fore shores. Check out this link https://www.wirral.gov.uk/planning-and-building/built-conservation/archaeology Hope you enjoy your new hobby as much as I am hoping to. I've had my gear for two years now and really want to get cracking on it. I've seen a few people in newbrighton metal detecting recently. They will be caught I'm sure !!

Some of the foreshore on the east coast of the Wirral is Crown Estate who are much more liberal than the inward thinking Wirral Council.
I also think the Wirral Council's statement that they don't allow metal detecting on ANY of their land is an exaggeration, I'm suspect that is not a by-law.

I've been on West Kirby and New Brighton and nobody said anything to me. They do state it but I ,m sure it would be only a jobsworth could be bothered to do anything about it. I used to have a detector Pater and Cobra but sold it a few months ago. That was part of the problem finding anywhere good to go with it. Do put any of your finds up and show us as I used to and I think quite a lot of people find it interesting, not that I found anything really good but still. So good hunting that guy found a Roman pendant (think that was what it was) just recently in Chester so you never know. Look forward to seeing what you find, good luck. .

Thanks for the feed back guys. Hi cobra I have had my detector for 2 years now as well and have not got started yet. I know some places I would like to go (around the bottom end of Ellesmere Port and around the canal for example). How would I go about finding a local club. Thanks.

Bait diggers cause a bit of mess on the beaches. Ive dug bait and even when you fill the hole in it still looks a bit untidy but no more than when kids have built sandcastles so I cant see the reason for WBC trying to ban it.

I recommend football goal lines NOT the pitch they don't like it. Don't do canal. (MSC)As far to much loadstone on the banks. Old North road along the oil works. Old aircraft bits Rivacre road eastham end just afore the bridge go into the trees. You will find all kinds ( right hand side looking towards eastham)

Are there any detecting clubs on the Wirral? I'd jump at the chance of detecting on private land ( with permission) or are there any land owners that anyone who knows will grant permission to do a dig?

There is West Kirby metal detecting club. Type that name in you will find all the details. I used to have a metal detector and did go once to this club , they all very serious about it and they do have meets for digs. You got more chance with them than getting permission on your own to detect land. I wrote to a few and nobody got back to me . Good luck Pete and please put any finds up here to show us, I still find it fascinating stuff…
