What's happening here? A large part of the car park has been fenced off for what appears to be a refurbishment company. It contains a large skip full of what appears to be old shelving units, but I couldn't see any evidence evidence of them in the store itself.

The rear of the building is three storey with a (exposed) basement and first floor. The first floor has staff room and staff facilities (kitchen, toilets, cloak rooms) as well as admin and plant rooms. The basement has chillers and various secure storage as well as a preparation area and more plant rooms.

There always is a bit of a junk pile round the back which I haven't understood.

They have started work on the ceiling and lighting now. It looks as if a full refurbishment is being conducted at dead of night.

I recall the building when it was the Bebington Essoldo Cinema. My wife and I went to one of the last shows there one evening. The audience (about 10 or 20 in number) assembled in the foyer to be told that the projectionist had not turned up. One of them said his grandad was a retired projectionists and after a phone call sped off on his motorbike to get him.

He did a good job of it as remember, and the manager came around himself during the show and went around the audience, dotted about the place dispensing free tubs of ice cream! I think he knew it was headed for the skip soon anyway.

I think the bakery is located in the basement too. There is a vent from which emerged a delicious smell of baking bread and cake. It smells a lot better than it tastes when you buy it IMHO.

Congratulations to Messrs Tesco in the Bebington Road branch.

At last they have realised that compelling customers coming into a store who want to pick up a basket to cross the path of customers leaving it, pushing trolleys or push chairs or carrying bags is NOT such a good idea. They have cleverly moved the baskets to an empty space the other side of the door so that incoming and outgoing streams of customers are not perpetually colliding with each other.

It has only taken them 50 years to make this stunning leap of ingenuity. Better late than never though!
