I think the point may be missed here Heres some text taken from the Top Gear site, which probably explains it best Bugatti Veyron
It started as an off-the-cuff comment by VW boss Ferdinand Piëch about how great it would be to make a car that could do 400kph and had a 1000 horsepower. The Veyron has managed to achieve the impossible; a car so good even Jeremy couldn't find fault with it. It's so good, the Stig cried after driving it.
And that's what makes the Veyron special, it's an engineering feat. Apparently VW are losing money on every one they sell. But thank goodness, in this day and age that someone is prepared to create something, not just to make money, but because they want to see if they can.
But its better than that, its not just a way of proving their engineering prowess, it's a seriously great car and Jeremy has not stopped going on about just how great. The statistics alone make a man weak at the knees. For example, the Veyron has staggeringly good brakes, they can bring the car from 250mph to a complete stop in just ten seconds. It gets even better, at full speed, the Bugatti will empty its 100 litre fuel tank in just 12 minutes. It goes without saying, a 100 litres of petrol costs £100.
The fact is though, very few people will ever own a Veyron. It does, after all, cost the large part of a million quid. But that isn't the point. The point is that it is to cars what Concorde was for planes. Something that will be recorded in the history books as a feat of human endeavour.

Would only need to sell about 50 to more than cover costs. Thats a cost of £5,000,000 (5 Million) per car to make and they sell them for £850,000 therefore losing approx 4.15 million pounds per car they make and sell Talk about a lost leader.......

That not how i understood it mate, i was of the impression that Each car cost £5,000,000 to manufacture and not just to develop.
I distinctavly remember it stating they are loosing over £4,000,000 per car they sell.
It was a personal challenge from one of the bosses and they knew they would stand a huge huge loss even before they started the project.

if it cost 5 million to develop thats pretty cheap for a car that fine.5 million per car is a lot more like it.As theyre only selling a few then all the money they spent could not be made back unless they sold the car for 6 times the price,or made shit loads more cars.I dont think each car cost 5 million,i just think that, for instance, theyve made only 50 cars and the whole project cost 250 million including research, developement, advertising, and, ultimately, building the fleet. Hence the maths makes it 5 million pound per car.I reckon they could build 1 more car on the priduciton line and from start to finish it prob wouldnt even cost half a million.Thats my understanding

f**k me that viper better have traction control! otherwise the rear wheels will be spinning all the way to 250! the bugatti will beat it to 250 no doubt, and the viper would take some time to even get close to it.
