LOL, I remember having to change to a crappy steam hauled at Rock Ferry. Why did you have to change again at Hooton; was it because you'd caught an Ellesmere Port train?

Cheers, Chris.

I remember everyone had to change at Hooton for Ellsmere Port and Chester as that stretch of track wasnt Electricfied yet.. The trains where horrible as they where diesel.. Class 142's which where modled off the single deck Leyland bus which is pictured above as they where built by BREL Leyland for cheap runners.

Just to put some dates in, for those who don't know:
Line as far as Hooton, electrified in 1985
Hooton to Chester electrified 1993
Hooton to Ellesmere Port electrified 1994.

The point I was querying earlier was; if you HAD to change to diesel at Rock Ferry,(pre-1985), then you didn't have to change again at Hooton for Chester, unless you were on an Ellesmere Port train. Between 1985 & 1993, you'd only need to change at Hooton.

Cheers, Chris.

We've had this conversation before haven't we Chris?

I was born in 1982 and lived in Bromborough with my parents till I was 20. The rest of my family (Aunts, Uncles, Nan) live in Liverpool. My Mother and I would visit my Nan in Liverpool every weekend by train and I can vaguely remember changing at Rock ferry onto a "new age" electric train. Then it was very exciting when the Electric trains came to "my" train station, but it also took away the "magic" of changing trains.

Yes, we have had this conversation before. So, you were only 3 when you stopped having to change trains; amazing how strong our childhood memories are. I too remember the excitement of travel & changing trains. From where I lived, I could take the 28 bus to Rock Ferry to go to Chester, but it was more fun to take the 64 bus to Hamilton Square then change at Rock Ferry. Even more exciting, though, was to go to Woodside & take the train direct to Paddington, which took 7 hours, when anyone with any sense went to Lime Street & got to Euston in 4 hours. I suppose, when young, any form of travel was exciting; now it's just a drag!

Cheers, Chris.

Sounds like a great trip. My best trip was delivering a Porsche 911 from Ohio to Los Angeles; 6 days & played poker every night. Made enough to cover petrol & motel costs & then some.

Cheers, Chris.
