The Royal Mint has unveiled the first new designs for Britain's coins since decimalisation nearly 40 years ago. The Mint commissioned new "reverse" designs for the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins that feature the shield of the royal arms to partner the Queen's head on the flip side. Here's a first look at the changes

Monstrous waste of money. Good designs though.

No wonder the Royal Mint are struggling finacially, the eff all wrong with the current coins.

They serve a purpose though... what more do you want lol?

The internal combustion engine, still for the most part, looks the same - and there isnt any real reason to change it cos it works lol.

Get rid of the 1p and 2p and round everything off like australia for example if something is $3.99 its $4 theres no 1cent's or anything like that in australia and its a hell of a lot easier Scrap the penny

It's all Metric crap !! What was wrong with 12d to a shilling and 20 shillings to the pound ??

The public got fleeced rotten when we went "decimal" and an lot of scumbag traders made a LOT of profit ! Grrrrrrrr....

For one Im shocked to admit I dont remember pre-decimisation currency

If its just the design they change, it wont make any difference which ones are legal currency

Its when they change the size / weight / materials used that they have to phase the old coins out.

The £3.99 business was introduced by many shops to reduce fraud by staff - it meant that it was very unlikely that a customer would have the exact money so the member of staff would have to open the till (meaning that the sale was rung into it) rather than if it was £4 they could pocket the money and never ring in the sale.

With the fact that a majority of sales are card based now, this will become less and less of an issue - so you may well be right.

On these new coins are we sure that this wasn't something left over from Tuesday?
