I think you must all have Voyeuristic Intentions...Listening in to conversations etc... Either, that, or youve been watching too much Smoky and the Bandit Breaker Breaker Two Niner...
I just can't see the facinasion with talking to other random people over radio??
I can see the facinasion to annoy taxi drivers though

As for being a nerd - probably one of those too. Signed up to do 2 more qualifications on top of Law just for the hell of it! As if the Maths and English exams weren't bad enough. Only doing them because I can! Why wasn't I as focussed as this at school??

IMHO CB or HAM radio is very similar to internet chat rooms and forums, you talk to complete strangers about similar interests and organise eyeballs or meets.
My Handle was "Death Leopard" I started with a midland with mag-mount, then a Cobra with a power mic, amp and di-pole.
I'll get a pic tomorrow of my dads current system. its a kenwood of some sort.

Cruisers using CB's could be a great way of fighting back against mobile speed cameras or even road works or arranging meets whilst out driving around.

Hehe fantastic i had multple rigs the best CB i ever had was a Harrier CBX had it for 5 years then i sold up as i got bored with the same shit but seriously the one thing that killed CB radio was Internet And yep CB is just like this forum i hardly now anyone on here and i speak to all you guys so whats the difference hehe
Good rig it was I used to own a Eurosonic 80 channel handheld and on a Atmospheric lift (skip or lift as it was nicknamed) i talked to somebody in norfolk it was wierd but amazing at the time
roger diddly di-pole....theres sumin called mobile phones now days we ll be putin 8 tracks back in are cars and 1 of those radios that stores 3 stations on MW and 1 LW......breaker on the side come back......
1-9 a copy.. Used to have cb radio. Lived on the 'Ponderosa'.Handle was 'Wind Breaker'. Can't remember name of rig but had side bands and everyother band. On in early 70's. I found there were too many 'bucket mouths' in the end spoiling it for the good buddies out there.
Still have a couple of base mount sets bought more or less the year CB became legal, and a 40 channel hand-held. Think I will throw some batteries in the hand-held and see if anyone is there..

Got frequency's book you can lend explains how to use ur scanner if its ur first one it takes a while to under stand how they work. not all emergency services are DAB.
166.0850 - Wirral Community Patrol 166.1500 - Wirral Borough Council 453.7750 - Pyramids Shopping Centre 440.9250 - Liverpool County Council 156.0000 - Coast Guard 156.6000 - Mersey Radio Channel 12 or Marine channel 12 156.4500 - General movement and situation Statement from Mersey Radio also Marine band channel 9 70.6250 - Merseyside Fire Brigade 70.9625 - Merseyside Fire Brigade 71.0375 - Merseyside Fire Brigade (note the fire service use AM) 456.600 - Liverpool City Centre Shop Watch
Between the bands of 440 - 449 theres quite a few PMR users some are local and some are Liverpool dont forget they have repeaters..
My battery is dead on my scanner atm need to charge it but i have more frequncies for you when i get time Wheels..
wheels your scanner should have 5 pre set channels should search from 66.ooo to 512.000 when stops on frequency put in memory.squelch has to be set rite to work properly
440.875 - Cherry Tree Security Liscard 441.91250 - birkenhead Shop Watch 456.950 - Liverpool shop Watch 454.86250 - Northern Line - Train to Sandhills control (signal issues etc) 454.91250 - Wirral Line - Train to Sandhills control (signal issues etc) 440.100 - Tunnel Police (still in use they aint migrated to digital) 440.200 - Port police (not sure if they still use this UHF frequncie they might of migrated) 433.250 - Local Amatre Radio repater (used to be based ontop of the kellogs factory in liverpool not sure if its been moved) 144.750 - Another Amture radio channel in use 156.500 - Marine channel in use 157.050 - Marine channel in use
Theres a few more for you Wheels.. I miss the police on the scanner it was great when action was happening like a chase id get it out listen to the helicopter and the chase as if i was there but i tell you one thing these pip's would of drived me insane..
ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!! lol the coppers must of gone to bed with that ringing in there ears...
Most people would have to understand the lingo plus walking around the streets with a scanner (specially birkenhead) would get you a hello hello from the law The only way to have a scanner is to have it in doors and listen only and dont use or gather information from them plus use it for morale purposes.. They are good sources of information specially at air shows when you can listen to the red arrows and other intresting little tid bits Scanners are only illegal if they are used in crime and use improperly.. There are PMR's advertised on ebay which do UHF and VHF and can transmit on any frequncie having one of these in your possession if the police still had there UHF sets would of got you a prison sentence and im sure it would still cause you can intrude on people frequncies and stuffs so its best to stay clear of these radios..
Loads of people use the PMRS. the police don't give a toss unless there used in crime As you say. use and don't upset any one happy days. There is a poster on wall in custody suit saying if you have scanner or radio device on your person tell officer on desk..
It is illegal to use a scanner other than to receive broadcast and some other (very few) transmissions.
The Wireless Telegraphy Act prohibits :-
"any person, without legal authority, [to] use any wireless telegraphy apparatus with intent to obtain information as to the content, sender or addressee of any message (whether sent by means of wireless telegraphy or not)"
It is also an additional offence to pass on any information gleaned from illegal use except for use in legal proceedings.

While moving stuff out the loft for the tip I came across my old rig. I posted on autowirral and was told of this thread. When I told my kids about it (they didn't know what CB was)they thought it was a great idea and had me set up my rig -alas dead as a dodo. Spent many a hours chatting away, went to a few meets (eyeballs)and made some good friends. My kids are still laughing at the "slang" we used.. But they want mto buy a new rig, I was surprised that there are still companys selling all this stuff. Anyhow, I'm up for a wiki channel, and I'll even buy another for my car (I'm hoping to attend some AutoWirral meets). Suppose it may be an idea, if things get started only to use legal channels and power. I'd hate for such a great community as this to get a bad reputation for blanking out TV sets and the like (does that sort of thing still happen?). And rigs are so inexpensive - under £50. Yep I'm in if things take off.
From 8 December 2006, it will no longer be necessary to hold a Wireless Telegraphy (WT) Act licence in order to operate Citizens’ Band Radio equipment, providing that the equipment is operated in accordance with the WT (Exemption) (Amendment) Regulations 2006.
CB users share spectrum which is in a frequency band managed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). This use is secondary to that of the MOD (the primary spectrum user) and it should be noted that CB users must be prepared to accept incoming interference caused by continuing use of this spectrum by the MOD.
Please note: users must understand that CB radio equipment shall be operated on a 'non-interference, non-protected' basis; that is, it shall not cause harmful interference to, and shall not claim protection from, other radio services.
Well just to let you know i was the 2nd person on the Nocky with a cb bck many years ago. I was about 14 so it was about 30 yrs ago. My radio then was a Midland 100. I was Blue Merlin
I knew Eve very well and john. There was so many people on then, i remember going to the old swimming baths in New Brighton as they used to have a meet there, from thereit went to my Aunts place in Moreton called Tha Apollo. HAHAHAH them were the days.
Half an hour ago I came across my CB handheld set (Tandy) so I threw a set of batteries in it and - not a soul was there, just static

New member. I remember CB with a passion and a sentiment I'd like to see turned into a REVIVAL OF CB RADIO in the UK - or, at the very least, on the Wirral.
I drained my old, dusty log-book into this post - I hope that this is okay to do. Let me know if you know anybody in the list.
Feel free to E Mail me if you can update any of these details (such as anybody who has passed away since the 1980s, etc..).

i was on the cb in 82/ 83 was on the giro and started as spiro from the giro then later silver leopard i think when i moved to tranmere ,if i had the time i would go on again 10/4
I remember larger local networks that very often involved an "Olive", but I could barely get to Giroville with using only indoor aerials and the same limitation made it hard to hear the Giro, most nights.
I had an 18ft Yagi in the loft set up on a wiper motor with a few alterations, and my telly was playing up, I was told it was pulling in signals from afar so I took it out. I later found out it was next doors central heating pump not earthed.I read a book later that said with the right gear it would pull in satalite transmision. You wont know me as I used a lot of names.Angela Rippons arse was one I just liked to hear breaker breaker who are you talking too. they always asked more than once .It was like having three dipoles in a horizontal position as apposed to vertical.
This is a year old, where have I been???? I had a cobra 148gtl dx it had 1/2 watt switch, upper side bands lower side bands, roger bleep switch the full hit.I used to Dx and I was the Whiskey Bravo 148 I think, got all over the world and got cards with coins stuck to them from every where[they may still be in the ex,s loft]even spoke to a feller in the same street as my sister in Toronto Canada,he knocked on her door and told her and she thought he a crank. On the normal AM band I was sea level7 wich was a supply boat I was once on.My brothers handles was unibond and Fabian..it was good fun for a bit then too many silly people and too many complaints with the 50watt burner,3 eliment directional yagi on the roof and a base loaded 17'magnum.I remember a lad called Japan..his name was Steve from around Price street..had a good time, cant remember what happened to the all my gear though
I started with a "Duette CB40" handheld CB, with the safe-dial type channel changer on the side and, to the best of my knowledge, no readout at all. I think I got two copies as I walked around Rock Ferry.
- Next, I bought (from a shop in Market St., in Birkenhead) an "Alba" (Bush) rig, with sliding volume, squelch and gain controls (freaky). I used a "Bazooka" aerial (pitiful, but what did I know???) and I had to put that at the top of a brush pole and was advised, at the shop, to just lean it in a corner of the room, or loft, somewhere. That was the cheapest and most disgraceful rig I ever owned - over the first few months, I experienced just about everything to hold, to use a control, came off in my hand, during use. The mic' was a non-power disgrace. But, y'know?...I still loved it. I loved it because it was my first home CB and I could speak to locals on it. I'd become a member of the CB folk.
- I had a vile, pale-blue PSU and it caused a hum in my transmissions of around 30% and that drove others crazy - "chronic" and "doin' me head in", they usually said. I heard my own buzz, once, and they were right in complaining. It wasn't until I bought a "Bremi" (possibly Italian?) PSU that that noise vanished and grateful I was, too. I've still got that pack and it will be used when I put back together the old, clunky rig.
- My 2nd home CB was bought from a large store (called "McOnomy", or "MacOnomy", or something similar), near Woodside. It was an Amstrad CB901 - yep...the disco lights and the adored (!) rodger beep in it. And, I really was the buyer of the very last one that they had in. That performed far better than the old Alba - but so would a pocket calculator, come to think of it.
- I knew a breaker called "The Squire" who was in Bebington, at that time and he sold me a "Half Breed" aerial (that's not to imply that I knew what that meant at the time, of course) and it came mounted on a converted office chair/swivel chair stand and I had a lot more performance out of that Amstrad. The "Bazooka" joke of an aerial (for 4 watts, at least, it was a joke) was sold to "Moonshiner", Brian, also in Bebington.
- Then, I shifted to a Rotel RVC240, also bought from the Market Street shop, for only £35, as I recall. I also switched to using a 7-feet "Firestik" and a Full Wave "Roadhog". I put the Roadhog on the Half Breed's conversion stand and the 7-feet "Firestik" on a 5 inch limpet magmount, on an old (wait for it) roasting tin dish that my mother wasn't using again, until Christmas.
- Then, I bought an "Altai DM315E" echo power mic', although the quality was far better if I left the echo turned off - and, I almost always had it turned off, by popular demand that looked set to become either a death squad or an official petition sent to the Houses Of Parliament. The only thing I don't still own is the echo mic'. Everything else is still here, and just waiting to be put back together, and they will be.
- Thanks to CB, I met 3 of my former girlfriends. Also, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best female friends that I've ever had were met through CB and the 1st is still around, as such. I kinda miss contact with the other two, I'll admit.
It wasn't just that, though...
- Old folk were comforted and able to "join in" because of CB. People were brought together because of CB. The lonely folk had people there for them, even during the night hours...it was the SOUND OF A HUMAN VOICE and it was costing them absolutely nothing. And, unlike telephones that they could afford the network costs of, THEY COULD HAVE LOTS OF THEM TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE, to talk to...I rarely see anything that compares with that "group" feeling, here, on the Net.
- And, that availability of people's voices and having their "company" (mixed with knowing that they were almost all locals, too) always, looking back, felt better to have, back then, than the appearance of typing on a screen does (for me, at least), now.
- Later, I bought one of the big Tandy 4 watts handhelds. It was 2nd hand. Happy? I'd lusted after those in the Tandy catalogue for a fair couple of years, seeing that the £134.99 price would prevent me from ever getting one. Then, there I was, owning one! The whip worked a treat, although the furthest copy I ever had on it was 8 miles - it never did any better than that. I used to leave the whip down for almost all the time and make do with the screw-secured "rubber duck" aerial. (Given that I once got out on a Papermate ballpen refill, the subject of aerials is still one of mystery to me, to be honest).
- I'm not sure what it was that brought about the end of that wave of British CB use, but behaviour on channels had a great deal to do with it. Most of those I spoke to on CB had nowhere near enough spare cash to afford a PC or the Internet, so I have no recollection of that being involved, BACK WHEN THE DECAY ACTUALLY STARTED, AT LEAST! Bucket mouths and trouble causers were around long before the Internet came along. They were the first real problem, I think. Many folk just melted away from CB because they eventually tired of the rats in the cellar who should've had their rigs smashed and aerials ripped down. But, today's old folk and many in other age groups, would benefit from having rigs and making friends, and having those evening or overnight chats.
CB then couldn't be revived because, every time former breakers decided to hook up their rigs and try them out, heard nobody on, said, "Just as I thought: dead!" to themselves, and didn't turn them back on at all or not for another few years.
The only way to revive CB among those who want it revived and still have rigs is by BEING ON FOR HOURS, EVEN IF NOT TALKING TO ANYBODY...JUST LISTENING IN!
Just, leave the CB on while you're around!
If nobody shouts, you've lost very little and lost no time in the day, at all. But, you've probably tried this, yourself...switched a reconnected rig on, switched around, listening out for people on the channels, heard nothing and just switched it off - often without even shouting for a copy, etc.. That's natural...I've done the same thing, myself. And, that's one of the most recent reasons why CB currently persists in being dead.
In this way, nobody is synchronised as being online with anybody else who is online. One day, you'll suddenly become somebody else's "Wow! Somebody's on!" voice, and that will be at least a start.
IN THE END, THE ONLY WAY TO INCREASE THE CB POPULATION IS TO BE THERE TO ANSWER WHEN SOMEBODY ELSE CALLS AND, AFTER TALKING TO THEM, REMIND THEM THAT YOU'RE ON OFTEN AND AT WHAT TIMES!
Yes - some folks may wait weeks for this to happen and the waiting will not feel worth it, at times.
The only alternative is to set up on-channels meetings by the use of the Net, at first, on sites like this.
I don't think British CB ever died - it's hibernating!

Ian.
Bloomin eck !!!. I well remember Blue Falcon (Colin) he was a good friend for a while, he used to live or may still live in Flint. Roscoe (Nick) i knew him as well, he used to live off the bottom af Gayton lane, can't remember what road but i know where his house is (or was). I seem to remember we went to the club that used to be next to the ice rink in Queensferry a few times, he was also a D.J for Marcher sound for a while as well as other radio stations !!!.
One things certain, i have not seen either of them since the mid 1980's
I used to have a few C.B's and can well remember it becoming legal in the uk, which i would have a stab at being 1981/82 ish, although i had one before that (Ham International with upper and lower side band). I had some legal ones as well but i can't remember what they where now !. Apart from the one in my car i had a monster silver rod on the end of the garage. to be honest i thought they would never come to an end. Met some good friends and still keep in touch with the odd one, but not on the C.B. !!. I think my silver rod fell of the end of the shed in the late 80's although i had not used C.B's for ages by then.

Originally it was AM bands, then when it was first legalised it became FM bands, that was on 27 Mhz in 1981, hence why that lot of CBs from then on had a circle with 27/81 stamped on the front, things like Rotel RVCs, Harrier CBX, Amstrad 901s, Midlands etc etc.
Ahhh the good old days.
Yes i was there, known as Lenny Brassneck for my sins. Funny i still use Brassneck in my email addy, and most people in work know me the same.
Still feeling ill i can't sleep so thought i would try ask a question or two.
What CB Radio's are capable of accessing the previously mentioned frequencies ..

I can buy a Cobra 148 (Thats all i know about it) What should i look out for ? And are they any good ?
For those frequencies, I've no idea if a CB/Ham transceiver would cut it, but a NEW scanner might.
I've got my machine set up, now, and I'm in Bebington. When you get your machine and get set up, let me know and we can arrange a time for a chat - when you let me know you're ready to go, I'll post my handle, here. Feel free to PM or E Mail me, with any other ideas or updates.
It's only going to be when folk come on sites/forums, like this one, and arrange get-togethers online, that the real CB revival will start to slowly scrape itself together. Right now, folk are turning on their CBs, hearing nobody and switching off for another 6-12 months and that's why nobody is on!
Folks...keep it on, keep shouting and keep flicking around the channels - there is really no other way!

These are scanner/pmr radio frequencies? Ive got a handheld scanner & frequency book for sale if your interested.
Hi all, could CB be waking up in and around Wirral? Hi Ian, hope things are good. I thought it may be you, seeing your breaker list it has to be yourself (WFG). I'm an Amateur and love my CB too, never managed to track down a new Harrier CBX in a dusty box buried at the back of an old household electrical shop. I use one of those Maycom 80 ch jobbies now. Good luck breathing some life into it, as Ian said, monitor, monitor and listen, it's free, make the most of it.
I still have mine which is the superstar 3900 my handle was in the earlier days white tornado then i used reddragon we all had them in the cabs in liverpool. Im after a complete mobile twig if any one has one going spare and no not one out of a bush or tree either

Good god thats the worst Bleed Over box in the world. Those old midlands arghhhh!!! Give me a Harrier CBX anyday i loved those machines.. I also loved the Amstrad 901 that bleep always annoyed everybody hahaha
Hehe thanks. Never went away.. Just dont come on much as i work full time so i dont want to be comming home to go on a computer after working with them all day hehe.
I remember my nephew trying to get a response from his so he could show me how it worked. No one was answering and then his mum decided to have a go and the airwaves came to life in reponse to a female voice! Nothing changes!

Enjoyed the AM CB at that time,my handle was Soldering Iron you can guess why, with a Ham which had a homemade roger bleep,so people knew who I was as soon as I came on,I wasn't always around so a mate of mine used it,it ended up with quite a few crystals so it had quite a few bands.
Breaker breaker!!! Can anyone help i don't wanna buy a sliver rod if it's dead on there, am in liscard just got my old radio an power pack out the shed, found a few silver rods for sale on eBay with poles just want to know if it's worth the hassle
my handle was xray and my dad was stingray i flicked mine on a few years back and recognised an old voice "rickadonna"(sharron) strait away we use them on the boats now and then now. not many use em any more. ive got one in my van as well, would be nice to see em come back in to use though
I have a fully banded Colt Excalibur homebase similar to the old Ham International Jumbo but with a nice silver front instead of the black. If anyone wants it they go for well over a hundred on ebay plus a lot in postage coz of the weight. If any interest I'll post it in the for sale section with pics and a video of it working
Oh and maxdavo I know your brother well. Tell him Steve the hippy said hi.
I used to have one back in the 70s. handle was sidewinder then hedgehopper (cant remember might have been the other way round) got done by police for not having my whip aerial cliped down

God cried on the day Lin died, just as surely as I did, and will for a long time.
CB Radio, for my area (Bebington & Bromborough), could never be the same with Lin gone. I've been hollowed out by her passing. I am a mere shell of who I once was.
Just found this by accident i was on the rig for years my handle was "Equalizer" and i was based in Tranmere
Ive had an enormous life changing experience since so do think i will be comming back ?
Dont live on the wirral any more but do come up to see my mum every soo often ,took the RAE early noorties but dont really use amateur radio either now

Was looking at a realistic on ebay a strait 40 the guy has a starting bid of £40 it wasnt woth that was going to offer him £30 (even though i didnt think it was worth that either) when it didnt sell the jerk relisted it for £75!!!!
Back in the day mint unmodded Cybernets or uniden 40's were £30 or £40 with mid
ebay has caused hysteria and people are asking ludicrous amounts for utter tat!!
Id like to have another go at it for old times sake but not at that price!
Maybe it will remain nothing more than memories :-
I've sat here reading this and the names popping out at me are a real blast from the past.
I spent a lot of my younger/teenage years with Andy Cannonball, Gary Sylvester amongst others. One lad from Upton, Darrin BedBug, is still my best mate 28 years later.

I used to chat, overnight, with a breaker called "Flakesie", or "Cornflake". His name was Steve. He was friends with another Steve, called "Inspector Gadget", as I recall.
Has anybody heard him on the CB? Has anybody any knowledge of where he is, now, at all?
I had a Stalker 9 for a short time bought it off Cptain Biggles to name a few that spring to mind from 1981/82 Captain Biggles "Steve" Sausage "Ross" The Banker "Eggo" Little Red Riding hood "Patricia" Angle Eyes Snow White Twinkies one&two "Paula and her twin sister Nicola" Pole "Dave" Scarecrow "smigo"
