Thanks for this thread I have enjoyed it. I have discovered that my grandfather was at Albert Memorial school on the 1901 census. He was put there by his father after his mother died in 1899, presumably because he couldnt or wouldnt look after him. While he was there he was taught to cook and repair shoes. These are the first pictures I have seen of the school.

What a find thank you - I have just found one of my ancestors in law attended this school in 1871. The census also confirms the Monhman Bielby and his wife Fanny along with their 4 children. My Hubby has just said that there was a lane by the school which was called (nicknamed I think) Gypsy Lane due to gypsies living there. Thanks again guys. I have just found your site and I think I may be back for me xxx

This topic has been covered at length in past edition of the quarterly Newsletter of Birkenhead History Society. Committee Member, Mr David Lee, has given an illustrated lecture on the subject a couple of years ago. Why not consider joining the Society or you can attend as a visitor to your 1st Lecture perhaps? They have a Website birkenheadhistorysociety.org.uk Their Newsletters have been published since the Society,s foundation in 1974 and are an excellent source of reference on all matters of Birkenhead & Wirral History.
