The whole city centre becomes a stage on January 10 2009.

The newly regenerated public space at the Pier Head will come alive with light and sound for this people's celebration. At 6.15pm, there will be a sound, light and visual review of Liverpool's history from 7,000,000,000BC to the present day. It will incorporate a history associated with its world heritage waterfront that has been reinvigorated like the rest of the city, and will be shown in full colour across several huge screens on the waterfront followed by a magnificent pyrotechnic finale from ships in the river finishing at approximately 7pm.

Says Phil Redmond: "Just as we opened the year switching from the sandstone and cobbles of the 19th Century People's Palace of St George's Hall to the 21st Century steel and glass Arena, so we are opening 2009 with a new waterfront. Just as our forefathers walked to the river front and looked out to the world, so we will in the future."


This 'Transition' will mark Liverpool's 08 Year of Culture to its 09 Year of the Environment, and will mark the official handover to the European Capitals of Culture 09, the Austrian city of Linz and Vilnius in Lithuania. The exciting prospect is that Linz has agreed to 'twin' with Liverpool and stage a complementing light event in Austria on the same night.

Disabled Access: An enclosure for disabled people will be in the carpark immediately infront of the Port of Liverpool building on the river-side. Best access via Mann Island. Please note Strand Road closures from 5-8pm. There will be a BSL interpreter in this area for deaf people.

Various venues around the city

From 7pm, many of Liverpool's extensive shops, Town Hall and 14 of its world renowned cultural facilities - including the Bluecoat, Open Eye Gallery, FACT, Tate Liverpool and the Maritime & International Slave Museums - will open late. The event will include street theatre in the areas of Liverpool One, Derby Square, Holy Corner (the cross roads of Whitechapel and Paradise Street - where McDonalds is), Church Street, Lord Street and Bold Street and these will be animated with various performances from: LIPA peforming arts students, Beat Life, Liverpool Samba School, Collision dance group with their performance of The Line and other various street theatre acts. Locals and visitors alike can venture into the city centre to enjoy Liverpool's Light Night - an evening of street performance, art and exclusive shopping.

Liverpool Light Night is part of a national programme of events covering the whole of the UK supported by the Association of Town Centre Managers www.lightnight.co.uk.

Mike Cockburn, Liverpool City Centre Manager says "Liverpool Light Night is about celebrating the city centre's extensive and mixed cultural facilities, with shops and restaurants joining in to provide a super event for families. We hope Liverpool Light Night along with Transition Event will become an annual event in the city."

Throughout the night, Liverpool's many restaurants, bars and clubs will be ready to welcome visitors with the best in local food and hospitality.

Access is free for Transition and most of Light Night venues.

The International Slavery Museum opened in Liverpool is the only national museum in the world dedicated to the history of the transatlantic slave trade and its legacy. Housed within Merseyside Maritime Museum at the Albert Dock; the exhibits deal with issues such as freedom, identity, human rights, discrimination and cultural change.

If anyone else is coming down to New Brighton to watch the fireworks, wrap up extra warm as it's posiively Baltic on the front!!

Jac,could be worth thinking about going to Woodside,better view and you will get better photo`s of the occasion.

It'll be heaving though. We'll probably walk up to past Vale Park, by the little white house I'd love to buy We'll also have the dogs with us so don't want to get too close in case they get scared.

Go to the small car park on the Priory Industrial Estate. Its not very popular (yet) but if you go early enough, should easily get a good view

6:15 ish I think, finish around 7. Don't think the fireworks will run that long, but that's the times set aside for the whole finale.
