A MAN has been questioned by police after the discovery of his mother’s body.
Police went to the home of Winifred Leatham, 84, in Thorncliffe Road, Wallasey, on Monday afternoon after a call from a member of the public.
David Leatham, 55, was arrested on suspicion of murder and later released on bail pending further inquiries.
A post-mortem has been carried out but the results were inconclusive. Toxicology and reports are now being awaited.
Neighbours said Mrs Leatham was a friendly woman who had lived in the area for many years, previously in Station Road.
Police were called after gas engineers attended the property amid fears that gas had been intentionally released into the house.
Retired construction trainer Tony Rozmarynowski, 63, was evacuated for one-and-a-half hours after the alarm was raised.
He said: “Winifred was quite an eccentric, I haven’t seen her for some time and she suffered with her health.
“I used to hear her playing her TV quite loud and from what I hear the police think the body may have been there for a few days.
“Her son is quite well known in the area.
“He drinks locally and sometimes in Birkenhead.
“Last week social services visited and tapped on the window. They told me they were trying to contact them, but I said they often didn’t open the door to anyone.”
Police sealed the house while forensic experts carried out their investigations. Officers were also carrying out house-to-house inquiries.
