Your right it was on the corner of Patten Street and Corporation Road. I think it had shut and gone even before that Film star/Actor killed himself while driving up Lansdowne Road one night {he drove into that dead end on the left hand side as you went up Lansdowne.} Think his name was Bonny Calino or some think like that. It was a long time ago, any body remember it happening
he died at the corner of corporation road and millner street just after where the road goes over the railway line, got that from a person who was in the area at the time...so he tells me!
Ive just caught up with the Index page again ( I think and hope ). With Derek's help the Index has duplicates removed so its looking gappy but that cant be helped is all about making it a accurate as we possibly can
As far as I remember, the Happy Valley pub was almost opposite Raffles Road, just across from the central library. Borough road was a lot narrower in those days and the pub was part of a row of buildings, including a garage and a shop - all now demolished to widen the road.
Thanks, kimpri1. I'm dredging my memory and I think the Happy Valley was a Yates's pub, but I'm probably wrong on that. But I remember Oak Bank flats very well - they were really impressive to us as kids and looked sky-high (although they were nothing as tall as the high rises built later elsewhere in Birkenhead). Was there also somewhere called Quarry Bank in this area? I think I've read that the Happy Valley pub was so named from the days when Borough Road was a stream situated in a pleasant valley which fed into Tranmere Pool near the site of what is now Central Station.
I was thinking last night with all the Pubs closing down we should all chip in and buy a derilct pub (obviously not burnt out by the Council) and call it the Wiki have a few computers here and there and lock it on to the Wiki Wirral website and people can all gather there and one other note.. Let it have a big huge car park for the monthly meet hehe
