Good spot Chris, it is interesting that the stench pipe has been extended, presumably just in case of any methane build-up getting ignited by the gas-lamp.
Also because it is tall (I guess), it has the extended width base as well.

Yes, it's twice the normal height; I think your explanation is probably correct.

Yes Chris, it certainly looks like a genuine item that has been recycled, just something with the depth of the edges of the "mouldings" make it look pukka.
Have you got a picture from the side to see if the locking loop has been welded on?

A couple more pics. of guide posts. The octagonal posts have cast into them the following: ERECTED BY THE WIRRAL FOOTPATHS ETC. SOCIETY. BY PERMISSION OF THE COUNCIL. (The ETC. stands for "& open spaces"). This society was founded in 1888 & is still active. The wording on the finger post varies, sometimes including the name of the society, sometimes "keep to the path", sometimes "please keep to the path". I suppose they varied by date.
When i look at some of the pics i think i know where there are similer things but when i go for a look they are no longer there !!. Lost in the time between then and now !.
