I'd like a history boff to tell us the history of the park+ how much it was to get in. And when etc
Birkenhead park the 1st public park in what? 1859 or something so Ashton may be older than that? Or just an alternative? V.interesting

It is possible that the turnstiles where only used when they where holding tennis tournaments. There are many other entrances to the park that have never had turnstiles since I can remember anyway, only the one which happens to be right where all the tennis courts are situated that Kimpri1 has photographed.

Edit: I was wrong. you did indeed have to pay to enter once(Two thirds of the way down the page).

Also I did not know this....

It is the third oldest public park in Britain, being pipped to the post first by Birkenhead Park and secondly by Bolton

What a good thread, the amount of times I've passed these cast iron fixtures and not given them a second thought.

Back to the green box....New thought. It's a bit unlikely that there would be electricity required in the park. I don't know the geography there but if the box is near the fountain, it could have housed the stop cock for it and maybe irrigation for the plants and grass. Perhaps the pipes out of the sides were for hose connections?
