By the way, the second of your photos above, when hovering over it with the mouse, appears to be labelled "1997". I came to live in New Ferry in 1988, and I think the tarmac kickabout area had already been built on the site of the former bowling green at that time. So I think the photo is at least a decade earlier. The photo was supposed to be taken on 30th May 1997 - I will see what I can find.

Re air raid shelters,Grove St school had its own shelter,in the 40s there was a grassed area in front of the building and the shelter was there.there was other bomb damage in New Ferry, when my family moved to Winstanley Rd in 1940/1, the area across the road where the flats are (Winstanley House?)had been bombed. Our house had been damaged and was repaired before we moved in.

Where do you mean exactly, there was a little grassed area with the railings round in front of the building, then the bigger area of grass also at the front of building were the sports day was held. an

Went there today, all three shelters are still there but the one nearest the side road has been interfered with and partly built on. Was off work today and finally managed to have a look for myself. You are right, the shelters themselves remain untouched and are still there. The one nearest the kickabout area (former bowling green) has had the surface of the south facing slope disturbed, but I suspect only at topsoil level. There is no indication that the air raid structure itself has been damaged. From what I remember of it, its profile is still intact. That's a relief!

a new play area has been added to the park, not too sure if they are on top of the shelters, but they are on the hills . . .
My grandad was telling me when he played in the shelters, the entrance was always open (in times of war) him and his mates would wonder in for a look around and they would use the lantin at the entrance to light the way. there was one main entrance and then it split up into three, said it was good fun untill the warden found them!
He was also telling me of when a bomb exploaded in his road (ill have to ask him the name of the road) said it did a fair bit of damage and some lost their lives.
do we have any maps or plans of the shelters ?
