Hi

I would be grateful if anyone can update me on the Great Eastern pub and if it has been listed yet?

Cheers

Yes and No, it has been allocated number 263 on the index but nobody has put anything up yet.

The pub is up for grabs at £300000, I reckon they will take £200000 if someone offered. The planing permision for flats was turned down.

When the council visited, they said there was none of the "great eastern" ship parts left in the pub, is this so?

Hi Diggin

Thanks for this information it is appreciated. I thought that the building itself contained timbers etc from the ship when it was scrapped, as possibly was the case for other building in the area? There may have been some artefacts from the ship in the pub?

I am pleased to see the building listed as the pub has a connection with Brunel the man who built the most advanced ship in the 19th Century. It was 40 years ahead of its time and it was only bettered by the Titanic, built at Cammells.

Many think the Great Eastern was jinxed? It Broke Brunel's finances and his health, he had a stroke on board her a few minutes after having that iconic photo taken, where he is standing by the chains.

I am trying to determine when the pub was actually built any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

One little more gem ... the pub was called "The Great Eastern Picnic Hotel"

I assumed it would have been built just after the breakup of the Great Eastern, but the hotel existed in 1882.

RMS Titanic was built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast, and designed by Thomas Andrews

Hi

Diggin thanks for the date, about 8 years before she was scrapped? Oh and bert thanks for pointing that out about Harland and Wolff. I seem to have Cammell Lairds on my mind lately!

Once again thanks everyone.

Sorry, I forgot I left this open ended.....

June 6th 1867 refers to H Mills' Great Eastern recreation Ground

June 10th 1867 refers to "Mills' Great Eastern Hotel" and " The Great Eastern Hotel Pleasure Grounds, Tea Gardens &c
"
July 26 1871 the Great Eastern Picnic Hotel was advertising for a musician to play the Cornopean.

It was also known as "Mills' Great Eastern Picnic Hotel" when it was up for auction in 1877

There is also mention of it having a large ballroom that can accomodate 200 persona.

The Great Eastern Hotel was built in 1865. Here is a pic as it was in 1912.

Over Christmas, I spotted two surveyors outside the Great Eastern with measuring equipment taking readings. I didn't approach them at that time. This Wednesday (24th Feb), a colleague of mine was walking past the former pub when a group of people came out of the door. She politely asked them what they had been doing inside, and was given the gleeful reply; "Its being demolished love, for housing". !!!!

Eeek! Here we go again!! Cllr Steve Niblock has already checked, and as yet there is no new planning application in so we are none the wiser as to who these people are. The building is not listed nor is it protected in any other way, so we are deeply concerned that it could be lost. The previous planning application for housing on the site 18 months ago was rejected by Wirral Council as being too bland for such an important site. To our knowledge, the previous application's rejection was not contested/appealed.

It would be a tragedy if the Great Eastern should be lost, as it is the only distinctive building of its type on the eastern side of the bypass in this area. I have already asked about whether we can apply to have the Great Eastern listed, but have been told by some planning colleagues of mine (where I work in Liverpool City Council) that it is unlikely that we would be successful in getting it listed. Apparently we would have stood more of a chance if the original artefacts stripped from the Great Eastern ship and put into the pub in the 1860s were still there, but they have long since gone - unfortunately.

Suggestions please as to where we should go next. Would an online petition help?

the Great Eastern should never be pulled down, the last time they were going to pull it down and build housing on the site someone got a petition up and went around the area for people to sign,i was one who signed it.
If they want housing on the site why not do the same as they did to the Travellers Rest? and turn it into housing and not pull it down, it will never survive as a pub again.
Look how they pulled those houses down in Rock Park for the by pass! all that history is lost now! The Great Eastern has been there for well over 100yrs,it was there even before the present housing!
if there is a on line petition i for one will sign it!!

I have just put together a new online petition just for it. You can find it at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savethegreateastern/

today there were a load of vans outside the Great Eastern, looked like they were emptying the place....if there is anything left in there!! they had taken the metal boardings off the lower windows.
it will be such a shame if it's demolished.
