Here's one that has puzzled me for years - (no pic unfortunately !)
at Upton Station there is a structure standing on its own and looks like the base of a stack of some kind. It's been there as long as I can remember and even with the redevelopment in the immediate area it's never been demolished . Any ideas ?

First, welcome to this site; hope you find lots to interest you & maybe you have lots to contribute too.
It's the chimney base of the old water pumping station. Here's a link to it on the website of uptoncx, a long standing member of this site.

That's really interesting, I never knew that and I always wondered what the structure was. Thanks.

I remember those well, exactly where you say & elsewhere too; I'm sure there's some still around: picture someone? It's at times like this I wish I were closer.

Took this photo today near Capenhurst. This curved-top style is called "Cheshire railings".

There is a roundabout being built at the Cottage Loaf junction at Thurstaston. Similar railings have just been installed where the roadworks have cut into a neighbouring field.

Thanks Chris. Yes, those are the ones. Looking a bit tatty. They were black uprights and white rails if I remember correctly. I suspect they were designed to show at night to mark out the country road junctions without street lights. A very sensible idea!

Thanks to Kimpri1 for pointing this one out. Its an old gas lamp in port sunlight still with its internal gubbins.

Enhanced in Photoshop. The same light again but you can see inside clearer.

Even clearer! (Hope you don't mind)
The fireclay support for the mantle has been shot at! It was a pretty fragile setup, even without vandalism.

For anyone that is interested, the round cylinder is a 7/14 day wind up clock mechanism that turns the gaslight on and off morning and evening. The small diameter pipe to the left is the pilot light and the larger pipe coming off the top of the regulator and going across the lamp and up to the top section is the main gas supply controlled by the "Horstman/Newbridge timer"
