I do remember, i think it would have been around 1979, There was a fuel shortage and rationing at the pumps for a period of time. I remember going to Scotland in my Princess, i had enough to get there and about halfway back, the plan was get some in Scotland. I couldn't get any, on the way back in desperation i pulled off the M6 on a road leading me towards Kirby Longsdale and came across a petrol station in the middle of nowhere, i asked how much i could have and he looked at me as if i had two heads, he had plenty and was glad of the sale, Filled up and it cost me £16, relieved.

Back in 1960 a kind uncle who was in the army stationed in Malaya (as it was then) left ME (age 18 and just passed driving test) the use of his Vauxhall Velox for around a year or so. Finding the 4/6 for a gallon of petrol was often difficult because for the first few months I was still at school and then at college (Carlett Park) - grandma "helped". So a £ bought me 4 gallons

Velox as I remember it had a column change, 3 forward gears and one reverse and bench seats. Happy days grin

4/6 a gallon in 1960 equates to £3.63 at today's purchasing power - the actual higher cost being due largely to TAX and some oil price.

The van i had about 5 years ago had column change gears (Mitsubishi), i liked them, in fact the first few days of this van i tried to change gear via the indicator arm.

Can't understand people going to the dearer ones as petrol is set up with an ISO standard,so even cheap petrol has to come to that standard, besides that it's refined at Ellesmere Port by Shell and all the other companies buy that, what's in a name, the companies must be good at advertising or the mugs are braindead.

I can only assume there'd be protests if the price of alcohol was doubled. People have their priorities confused.

Ah yes i well remember when petrol went past a quid a gallon, lot's of petrol pumps could'nt handle it in the days before digital read outs as they only went up to 99p. From what i remember they halved the price at the pump and then doubled it when you paid !!.
I can also remember driving with a friend down the A5 we turned by Newbridge to head towards Wrexham, we needed petrol but when we saw the price at the petrol station my friend said "one pound twenty a gallon im not paying that the robbing Baxxards" !.
