Can anybody help?? My Daughter has an Acer 5315 Laptop. Last night whilst falling asleep she closed the lid with her headphones inside. This morning she switched it on and while the actual screen isn't cracked the inside LCD is. Is this fixable? and would it be expensive?
Around the edge of the screen you can make out the start up menu and the damage is mainly in the middle.
A similar thing happened to her DS Lite when she dropped it...(notice a pattern!..) but that was fixed.
DD is gutted and is carrying on as if the arm has been cut off, any help/advice would be grateful. Cheers

Replacement LCD for these can be got for about £60, should be able to find someone to replace it for about £25 or less.

DD - is she using my pseudonym? wink

It should be a fairly straightforward swap, though it may cost you between £50 and £100 for the LCD itself - http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=acer+5315+lcd&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

There will be instructions on the net if you get stuck, for dismantling the screen - if you have never dismantled a laptop before however, you may want to get a professional to install the screen for you - Should not cost more than £50 for fitting, id expect less than that though.

smile

My ballpark price might have been a little on the low side, forgot to add vat and postage so more like £85 in total for the LCD.

Can't think of a word for angelic beginning with D raftl

If you want it doing we have a fixed price for of £110 supplied and fitted for 99% of laptop screens.
If we have a second hand one, and you don't mind, then it's cheaper.
If you supply the screen yourself then we normally charge £25 depending on the screen (there are one or two that require almost the entire laptop to be dismantled before you can remove the screen)
We keep most screens in stock and if we don't have it we get deliveries every day.
I hope that this gives you some idea what you should be paying

I can fit a new screen for you for £85.

Collect the laptop, get the part number and ensure the correct screen is ordered and fitted and then return the laptop.

12 months warranty on parts and labor.

Thanks, Scott

That sounds expensive, looking at previous posts?

Not being funny but I'd be wary of giving my laptop to a person on a forum that I didn't know just for the sake of getting it done cheaper. You stand the chance of not seeing it again. Use a shop or someone who is trusted on the forum that everyone knows and has a high post count/long running membership.

Better to be safe than sorry smile

What makes someone in a shop more reliable, what about a shop fire or business shuts down over night and goes into liquidation. im always happy to prove who i am, i.e. driving license details and car reg details, won't take the police long to track me down.

There's just as much risk in it for me, I have to buy the part fit and warrant it and hope that i get paid when i return it.

I also offer loan equipment so i have to trust you with my laptop.

A shop, by law, has to have insurance to cover your equipment whilst on its premises, if they close down overnight this would be unusual if they'd been there for many years and people would know them, and their staff, well.

People like the easier route, they don't want to have to copy down driving licence and ID details (I know this, we do it when people lose receipts for items they have left), and if you're so worried about the cost of being actually paid for the job what do you do when a few screens fail (it happens) when you are offering 12m warranty?

It's not a dig at you, it's just one of those things with the "mobile" guys, there are a few of them around, some are good, some are VERY good, and others I wouldn't trust to change a fuse (I've employed one or two of them before, that's why they don't work for me now).

If you're (or anybody else) is advertising for business and you work in somebodies home then you need to have insurance to cover yourself and any equipment you use, any damage you might cause (amazing how many people have priceless Ming vases balanced on stands in their hallways smile ) It's just one of those things, and as for the loan laptop...fantastic, I have hundreds (maybe 5 or 6 hundred) broken laptops sat in storage, so you're telling me that if I give you one of them you'll give me a fully working one which you wont collect until I pay for the repair job on mine.... I (personally) think you might want to rethink that smile

It's sounds like you run a PC shop maybe?

I've been a tech for years and i don't mean bedroom tech, I've worked for 2 of the UKs biggest business IT providers for years, working with numerous large organisations, aswell as doing home repairs. i'm new to the wirral so trying to get back into businness.

If you run a business, then you will understand that "people like the easier route" people also like best price, not having to tackle that mess of cables at the back or dealing with parking, no shop or staff means lower overheads, better price.

Obviously the loan equipment is not top of the range, but it works, and when some loses their PC it's like they've lost an arm, again people like the easier route.

When items fail under warranty, thats just part of business. A good business will be able to cover that cost. some times you make a decent profit on an item other times you make a couple of £s, thats business, BUT GOOD CUSTOMER CARE!

Yes I have a PC Shop, it's been around for a LOT of years so I'm not too worried about anybody else starting up, there are several PC shops on the Wirral, some of which change their name on a regular basis to (allegedly) avoid bills from suppliers and warranties with customers, then, a week later with a nice new name, open up in the same place.

When I started the shops it was more of a hobby, our prices aren't high because I own the buildings no rent and the biggest wage (mine) is paid by our two main corporate clients (NHS & MOD).

If you leave someone with a laptop, you will get ripped off, 100% this is going to happen, it's not a dig it just will, when people have to pay for a repair and they have a working unit it suddenly takes a back seat, and then when you get the laptop back you have to format/reinstall it again, securely, to protect other users data, that's not customer care that's just doubling a workload and creating a headache.

We keep a lot of laptop screens in stock, so most are done within the hour or next day, yet you'd be amazed how many people take months to collect them. I'm not preaching, it just how things work in this area, in others EVERYTHING is collected within 48hrs.

We know what customers are like with PC's, the number of people who ring you 20mins after they dropped it off when they asked for a complete wipe and install, I think in the new place we're going to have a number of PC's you can use instore whilst you wait, just so no-one gets withdrawal symptoms smile

Items DO fail, laptop power supplys being the main one, you can see that pins have been broken or leads have been chewed, but as they've had it less than a year are convinced we should replace it for free, as it's not their fault the dog ate it (it's not mine either smile )

The thing is with Wiki that you are NOT allowed to advertise, most people on here know who everybody else is, what they do and the skills they have, so arriving on the doorstep and shouting "I can do that" isn't going to work (I know, Mark told me off for it more than once).

If you want, send me a pm, tell me what you can do and the experience you've had and I'll see if there is any work I can pass your way.
