Hi, I recently acquired a copy of my great grandfather's death cert. As I didn't know a great deal about him, and didn't have a date of death for him, or were he lived at the time of death in June 1929. He was originally from the Isle Of Man. What I would like to know is, his death cert. states he died at 126 Smithdown Road, Liverpool. Now I know at one time there as a Poor Law Institution on Smithdown Road, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if 126 Smithdown Road was the address of the institution, or had it by then been turned into a hospital?? His actual home address on his death cert. says Mill Road, Liverpool. Thanks in Advance Maisie

Maisie, came across this whilst having a bit of a google
My great grandma died in Smithdown Road Hospital, but all it says on her death cert is 126 Smithdown Road. As we lived in Scotland and had no connections in the area we just assumed she had died in someones house. My nan never talked about it because of the connection to it being a workhouse, Mum and I were upset to think she had kept it to herself all those years. She died in 1940
also Smithdown rd hospital opened in 1930.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.

Another , with an excellent link. www.institutions.org.uk/hospitals has the following entry under Toxteth Park : Toxteth Park Poor Law Union and Workhouse Located at 126, Smithdown Road, Toxteth, Liverpool. It became Sefton General Hospital under the NHS, but the Hospital has now been closed and replaced by an ASDA supermarket.

Thank you Bertieone, by the looks of this since it wasn't actually a hospital in 1929, my great grandfather died in the workhouse That's really sad... Still wondering why his death cert. had his home address of 99 Mill Street, because didn't people from the workhouses actually live there?? Very strange indeed...it also says that his step daughter registered his death. Will have to do some digging I think!!!

Ahhh now I see it...Toxteth Park Workhouse, had an infirmary attached to it...So he was more thank likely admitted to the infirmary. So it doesn't mean he did actually die in the workhouse...Not that it makes any difference to me.

Exactly the same situation went on at St Catherines in Tranmere ,Birkenhead . Workhouse was opened in 1863 with additions in 1880S and 1890s . You can still see the inscription above a bricked-up doorway on Derby Rd ' BIRKENHEAD INSTITUTION' . Municipal Hospital operated on the site from 1921 . The Poor Law Union was disbanded completely approx 1930 . Right up until the 2nd World War Birth Certs were still being issued showing 58 Church Road , Tranmere . The stigma of the Workhouse lived on for many decades after the Workhouse was long gone! In reality , all that was happening was that there was a Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths who worked from the offices there. Only the Poor had babies in Hospital or Single Parent Mums as we call them today !
