Met these guys, nice chaps. They think (as far as I am aware) that Portus Setantiorum - a lost port described on Ptolomy's map of Britain may be situated at Meols - hence their search in that area.
Obviously without this connection, Meols has been an important site from at least the Iron Age, so here's hoping they pick something up. There's obviously a settlement off the coast, but I don't know enough about marine archaeology to say how they're planning to map it.

Couldn't resist a dit or two on the morse key and looks like I'm getting roped in for Perch Rock "Thetis" exhibit and the radio room. Ah well, it'll give me something to do.

They had a laptop showing a cracking picture of the Peninsula and it showed that the river Mersey came out at West Kirby with a lot of land on the seaward side joined up to Lancashire, as I said I had to give up because they were busy.

...oh, no!! As if we don't have enough problems understanding peoples text speech on wiki, now we've got morse code! lol!! Anyone tell me when the Thetis exhibition is on at Perch Rock, or has it already started? (Interesting comment about the River Mersey, davew3. Thanks for that. Just sorry I missed it all.)

Nice pic of my boat, specially with the people in the background. I'm looking for the port first and hoping to find a fort somewhere close by, it's turning out to be a huge project. For those who asked it's Bernie McDonald who was with the boat, he keeps trying to claim he's retired The project is through McDonalds Marine, and yes I know I have a very similar boat to the RNLI.

Welcome Ruth... Thanks for confirming the fort thing. I was starting to think I'd imagined it! Hope you're going to be filming all this for the Discovery Channel?!!

Welcome to wikiwirral. I enjoyed talking briefly to Bernie McDonald at the show. Besides meeting other wiki members I thought it one of my highlights of my day. Where did you dig up the guards of your boat - the Cheshire Redcoats? Being cheeky here could you post a pic here for us of the laptop pic and keep us informed some time of your progress at Meols. They had a laptop showing a cracking picture of the Peninsula and it showed that the river Mersey came out at West Kirby with a lot of land on the seaward side joined up to Lancashire, as I said I had to give up because they were busy.

Welcome Ruth, if your boat had had a big sign saying "we are using this boat to look for a fort off Meols coast" then I think your boat and the gentleman who was looking after it would have had lots more attention from the Wiki gang and the people who went to the town hall, even though the RLNI is a good and a real charity to support, I think with charites advertising on tv and getting in your way at the supermarkets and on the High st is starting to numb people including me. I'am more interested in the fort and ask could you start a topic on the history forum for us about it.

Did anyone take a pic of the inflatable dinghy, underwater camera, and the elderly bearded chap outside. Got talking to him and found he was an Archaeologist or did diving for them all over the world. His group are hoping to find a roman port on Wirral maybe round the Meols area. What had me thinking was when he told me about king William using over 200 ships anchored off Hoylake to take his army across to Ireland. He told he had swum underground from top of Beaufort Road( where the Birkett ends up) to the docks He was 75 and still did the odd Archaeology dives.
Am only sorry the show was packing up and didn't have more time to chat with him. Anyone know who he was? Bernie MacDonald. Taught me to SCUBA dive at BSAC Guinea Gap baths before I went commercial. He used to have a dive shop in Prescott Road Liverpool. The lady (Sue) at the desk inside is (I think) his daughter. He invited me to come out & play sometime!

I reckon it is a permanent exhibit anyway. Been asked to get involved up there so going to give it a go once the bloke gets in touch with me. That's what I get for going to the Wirral History day. Ongoing from that day and the little sit on the bus, found my bus conductor badge but can't find my driver badge. I'll have to keep looking.
