Use publisher, got to templates and should be a load of pre formatted docs to get you going

Powerpoint is ok for this, just start off with a blank canvas, add text boxes, resize, colour, style etc add pictures and done.

It's windows 7 2010, I need the poster to be A3 and the leaflets A4 folded in half with the design on the front and writing on the second page inside! I've got the design all sorted and the writing but don't know how to get it the way I need it to be layed out .

Get down to a local printers, will cost you a few quid, and if you say you need it for a support group, they will probably run off a basic design, better than an amateur could do with Publisher, for free. Unless you have a colour laser (and even then it won't be as good), it will look far more professional. The problem with most publisher flyers etc, is they looks very amateurish (usually too reliant on Word Art lol).

That is true clip art looks a bit Mickey Mouse, you can however choose to use your own images, steer away from any of the word art though as that gives an amatuer appearance too.
