Apologies if this is in the wrong pleace, couldn't decide where to put it.

I was browsing the history of Stoeton Hall and came across this slightly worrying entry on English Herritage's at risk register. With particular focus on the Enabaling Development that's mentioned.

http://risk.english-heritage.org.uk...=11&st=a&ctype=all&crit=hall

I thought all the surrounding area was Green Belt?

I'm pretty sure that "enabling development" doesn't mean development in the sense of new build, rather, preservation work. Still, worth further investigation perhaps. I'd be surprised if the whole area isn't green belt.

It's been the cause of many a loss of a country estate Chris.

To enable the work needed to be done to the main building, a number of houses are permitted to be built in the surrounding area by the developer.

The proceeds or at least some of it from the sale of the houses is then used to restore the property at risk.

Here's a link to an article relating to a fight to stop an Enabling Development being granted in Kent.

Thanks for the clarification Rhoobarb. I hadn't realised how it worked. Not so good then.
