We are moving soon and have an electric cooker, Do we really need an electrician to move the cooker ? its wired in to a newly rewired kitchen right now and will be going to a fairly new rewired kitchen in the new house, both should be identical as both are done by the housing assoc, Is it easy enough to do like wiring up a plug just a matter of putting wires in the correct places or should we really use a spark ? have been quoted £50 to come one day and unwire and then come back next to install once we move the cooker, would appreciate opinions on this by people who know this stuff,

Also the front door to the new place is uPVC and very narrow is there a way to remove parts of it to make it wider ?
Thanks for any advice

£50 aint too bad for a qualified spark to come out twice....you have no problems paying a car mechanic £50+ per hour, whats the prob with paying a spark that?

I never said it was a problem, i also never said it was bad, i wondered if it was something we could do ourselves thus saving £50 at a time when we could use it elsewhere, Please read the post before having a go, jeez no wonder i never post , always someone ready to have a pop !

I could be wrong but I thought you were legally required to have a qualified electrician to do certain jobs and wiring a cooker was one of them.

I think you may be right Softy, especially where LHA are concerned. I have to say, I won't mess with gas, electric or water (unless it's basics such as changing a plug or a washer). They can cause far too much damage for my liking. I'd rather spend £50 I didn't really have on getting it done professionally than spend £5000 on repairing damage caused by fire or flood.

If in doubt, check the LHA website or call them for clarification. They do yearly checks so it'll be soon spotted if something is amiss. Hope that helps chick smile

As for the door, I have no idea frown I'm sure one of the guys on here will know though.

I wasnt trying to have a pop, sorry if I came across that way, just trying to emphasize that you had been given a good quote for a qualified electrician to go to two different locations. As also stated by another member when you have work done on a council property they MUST be competent. Whether you can or you can do it yourself there are things that you (not being an electrician) will not see ie. cable size not being right, earthing arangement not being the correct size, incorrect errection methods and the list goes on. Get the £50 electrician to do it and be safe smile
