I am researching Samuel Morse ( morse code )Just thought forum members would like to know that Morse visited Liverpool on 7th August 1811 ,he stayed at The Liverpool Arms Goree at a cost of one and a half guineas a day,he later went to see the Mayor ,a Mr Drinkwater, for permission to travel to London,Morse said by the look on his face his name should have been Mr Drinkbrandy. The mayor gave morse ten days to leave Liverpool,if he found Morse in Liverpool after ten days he would put him in prison.

Interesting, he would only be 20 at the time and it was before the 1812 war. Later in life he was active in anti-slavery campaigns but this was outlawed in England in 1807, so I'm curious why he was given a deadline to leave Liverpool.

Although Morse was a very religious man he did not agree with abolition of slavery,or the emancipation bill ,he likened slavery to master and servant situation. Regarding the need to seek the Mayor's permission to leave Liverpool,at that period in history, war between England and USA was looming on the horizon, maybe that was the reason.
