When you start at a school, the rules are made clear and most schools have you sign an agreement. This is yet another example of even more school time being used up to resolve problems from a parent who can't accept that their little angel broke the rules.
It amazes me that kids have a £xxx mobile phone yet don't seem to have the money for a £3 calculator.
The kids need to practice using a calculator that they can use in exams, not a mobile phone.

Its nice to hear commen sense replies, Mobile phones should be switched off in school, they are not needed, and as someone else said you can buy a calculater cheaply enough, they are there to learn not mess round, namby pamby parenting, its no wonder the country is breeding chinless wonders who think life owes them a living, !

IT was my grandaughter i was writing about , yes she does know the rules , yes she did brake the rules but complex maths is a subject she struggles with, so she used her phone without permission, she has got a calculator but she left it in another bag at home, her fault no-one else to blame and yes she was told off by her mum for this. Several weeks ago the school said that they will get her some one to one help ,to date this has not happened and i do know that things dont happen over night and do take time to set in place. As re the monsters round every corner i know thats not true but a person attempted to abduct a girl of a similar age to my grandaughter not 2 minutes from my grandaughters home FACT . I have not heard about any arrest being made so the person is probably still out and about. My daughter makes sure my grandaughter stays in a group on her way home so making ANY CHILD wait after school for about an hour to get their phone is not right. We meet with staff today and my grandaughter has spent the afternoon in exclusion at school with the FULL permision of myself and her mum . I think sometimes on posts like this it is quite easy if all the facts are not in the post for some to jump the gun and think the child is one who can do no wrong i can assure you all she knows every action has consiquenses (sp )? and she does not think life owes her anything , she comes from a close loving family and knows if rules are broken you take the flack . Iam sorry if my spelling and grammer is not up to scratch but i have some nurologacal? problems and it affects my written (or typed) word .

I think children having mobile 'phones in case of emergencies is a good idea, but I think if,when arriving at school, they turned them off and gave them to the teacher to mind until home time it might alleviate a few problems.

Whats wrong with you phoning your land line to check if your children are home. ?

Not unreasonable to take phone quite agree on that. But too make her wait at end of day is. They are not allowed to give detention on the same day, have to give 24 hours notice. So why should they be allowed to get away with doing that. I don't see it as whining i see it as a parent who cares. So many don't these days. When was that put into force?? I went to Neston and people would be given detention that day if they misbehaved etc. Pathetic Nanny State we live in. If you had prior engagements then the detention could and would be postponed. Even if it meant missing the bus home. Its a punishment and should be adhered to end of. If you break school rules and are punished, then oh well. You found another way home. Ring for a lift etc

i think its only right that when detentions are handed out they are for the following day, at least as a parent i would get to find out thats my child is on a detention ! and not leave me worrying as to wwhy they are late.
As for the teacher taking the phone away till the end of day i think is wrong, its private property.
